To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that l, EUGENE EnLiori, a subject of the Emperor of nstria-Hunga ry, and having resided in the United States one year last past and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Ships lDavit, of which the following is a specification,
My invention consists of improvements in ships davits comprising means for primathe same in upright and normal position, for cont-rolling them while being lowered, and sustaining them firmly when lowered with the boat suspended therefrom.
'ihe invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but lthe important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and soit is to-loe understood that the invention is not limited. to the specific ar'- rangement and organization shown and described.

Fig. 2 represents a partial plan view and a partial horizontal section on the line m-bc Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of an upper portion of the davit. Referring to the drawings :-1 designates a davit or crane whose lower end is Steppe in a vertical opening in the block or foot piece 2, which by means of the bolt or pin 3 is pivotally connected with the verticallyextending casing Il, the latter being secured to the gunwale or other propeiportion of a ship in any manner and serving to receive said block and the main portion of said davit, the latter being rotatable in said block 2, so as to be capable of being swung around to place a boat in position over a deck or outside of the same, and as the block is pivotally connected with the casing 4, said davit maybe turned in planes from and to the water and vice versa.
y also passes around y are at their In order to retain the davit in position on the block Q, a portion of said davit in the block is formed with a reduced neck 5 into which freely projects the point of the screw 6, the latter being iitted in a threaded opening in the wall of the block 2, thus forming a swivel connection for the davit on said block which while permit-ting the davit to rotate in the block, prevents it from disconnection therewith.
The casing 4 is composed of the side pieces 7 and the rear piece 8 which are firmly connected, it being noticed that the lower end of the block 2 is extended considerably below its pivot 3 so as to form a heel 9 and the lower end of said rear piece S- of the casing i is somewhat above said pivot forming the shoulder 10, whereby when the davit is in lowermost position, which is horizontal, said heel stops against said shoulder as an abutment for the davit, thus assisting to sustain the davit in said position, as most plainly shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The upper portion ofthe davit has a reduced neck 11 thereon. This is freely encircled by the sleeve 12, as a swivel, the upper and lower shoulders of said neck preventing the sleeve from longitudinal displacement on the davit. To said sleeve is pivotally attached the link 13 on which is'mounted the ulley 1&1, around which passes the rope or cable 15, the upper end of which latter is connected with said link as at 16. rThe rope the pulleys 17, which latter are mounted on a double block 18, the latter being pivotally connected 'with the bracket or arm 19, the latter rising from the casing t and in the present case being integral therewith, or it may be secured thereto, in any other suitable manner.
Projecting outward from said arm 19 are the aws Q0 which are resilient in nature and are adapted to embrace the adjacent portion of the davit ascatch'es, so as to hold the davit in vertical and consequently normal" position, while the rope 15 may be drawn in taut and thus assist in retaining the davit in said position.
The operation is as follows z-The boat to be lowered is attached to a pair of davits as. usualand the latter are swung` out horizontally so as to be over the outside of the ship. Then the davits are forced out of the catches .QC-and the davits permitted to lower controlled by the ropes 15. When the davits lowermost position, while the heels thereof abut against the shoulders l0 as stops or abutments as has been stated, the davits are held also by the ropes 1:5 which have been let-out to the required eX- tent, the davits thus being well enabled to sustain the boat and loacltill the boat reaches the Water said boat being detachable i from the fall ropes in suitable manner.
It is evident that the davits may be returned to their normal position by operation ot the rope 15, and when they reach the Catches 2O they are sprung thereinto and so with the assistance of said rope remain firmly in place while being contained t-ightly within the casing 4.
Ha ving thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a ships davit, a davit arm, a foot piece on which the same is rotatably supported, means for pivotally connecting said piece with a stationary member, said footpiece having an extension below its pivot and the stationary member having a shoulder above said pivot for engagement by said extension, means for retaining the davit arm freely on said piece, a sleeve engaging freely the upper portion of the davit, and means such as a. rope connectible with said sleeve for controlling the descent of the davit arm,
and for elevating the same.
2. In a ships davit, a davit arm, a stationary member on which the lower portion of the same is pivotally mounted, an arm on the upper portion of said member, a sleeve freely encircling the davit arm, blocks attached respectively to said arm and sleeve, pulleys having their bearings in said blocks, means engaged about said davit arm to hold it in vertical position and means such as a` EUGENE EHLICH.
