To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL H. WV. Doosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Releasing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a releasing device, and more particularly to the class of automatic releasable hooks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a hook of this character in which the bill thereof may be turned on reducing the weight of the load carried by the hook, whereby the said load may be automatically released from the hook.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a releasing device in which a load may be automatically released upon reaching a foundation or entering a body of water, the device being especially adapted for use in lowering life-saving boats upon vessels, whereby the said boats may be automatically released when contacting with a body of water.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hook constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being in position for carrying a load. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the hook in position for releasing its load. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof, the device being in the position as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. at is a sectional view on the line 14 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the hook comprises a stem 5, the same being adapted to be connected at one end with a hoisting cable or any other suitable suspension means, whereby it may be lifted or lowered when desired, while the opposite end of the stem 5 is formed with an outwardly bent or curved extension or nose 6, to the outer free end of which is connected a trip or releasing bill 7, by means of a pivot 8, the bill 7 being channeled, as at 9, in its under face for substantially one-half of its length, so as to snugly embrace the extension 6 when the bill is in closed position, or in a position for sustaining a load upon the hook.
Formed on the stem 5 spaced from its upper end is a rearwardly projected bearing 10, in which is engaged a pivot pin 11 connecting thereto a weighted arm or pea 12, the same being provided with a recess 13 receiving the bearing 10, and on this arm or pea are formed extension ears 14, to which are fixed arms 15 for connecting with the trip bill 7, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Arranged at opposite sides of the extension 6 of the stem 5 of the hook are links 16, the same being connected, by means of pivots 17, to the bill 7 and the arms 15 of the pea 12 respectively, so that upon the lowering of the weight pea 12, the said bill 7 will be moved outwardly and tripped for discharging its load. Normally, the bill 7 is engaged with the load and is thrown to a position so as to elevate the weight pea 12, which will be sustained elevated by the weight of the load upon the bill 7, thus holding it against tripping movement, but when the load contacts with a foundation or a body of water, its weight will be relieved from the bill 7, whereby the weight pea 12 will become lowered, automatically tripping the bill 7 and freeing it from the load, thus releasing the load from the hook.
