UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTCE.
SIMON W. HALE, 0F ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
KNIFE-SHARPENER.
To all 10h-0m t may concern Be it known that I, SIMON IV HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the Vcounty of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to knife Sharpeners, and has for its principal object to provide a device of that type, which may be attached to a kitchen table or cabinet, and is adapted for guiding the blade of a knife, which may be drawn therethrough, against suitable sharpening members so that an edge may be properly ground on the blade. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a sharpener constructed according to my invention, suggest-ing the method of application to a table and the application of a knife thereto.v
Fig. II is a vertical section of the Sharpener,
on the line II-II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a similar view, on the line III- IIL Fig. I. Fig. IV is an elevation of the body portion of the Sharpener. Fig. V is a similar view of the mating member.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates the body portion of the device which is preferably constructed of cast metal and comprises a base 2 and a laterally inclined plate 3, the latter having a curved lip t at its upper end, the body of the plate being in reality cast with a socket or cup 5 on its inner face, forming side flanges 5, as illustrated most clearly in Figs. II to V. At about the center of the plate the vertical side flanges 5 are off-set to form the shoulders 6, and projecting from the inner face of the socketed portion is a supporting rib 7, above `which a file member 8 is seated, the lile member being kept from lateral displacement by one side flange of the plate 3 and by the step rails 9-9, the latter also serving to retain the lile in position while the parts are being assembled. Also projected from the sock- Specication of Letters Patent.

eted portion, directly adjacent the base 2, are the bosses 10 for spacing the clamp lip 12 of the mating member 11 olf the body portion o-f the Sharpener, and which, in conjunction with ribs 9 and a rib on the mating member regulate the angle of the slot and the slope of the files. The mating member is also preferably cast and has the lower lip 12 o-f less width than its upper body portion so that said lip may fit between the side flanges of the body 3, the body of the mating member having side flanges 13 adapted to overhang the shoulders 6 and form with the side flanges of the body member, an upwardly flaring mouth, the upper free edge of said mating member having a lip 14 corresponding with the lip 4l of the body member, so that when a knife blade is placed over the device it will be guided easily between the members. The mating member 11 also has a supporting rib 15, for holding a tile member 16, and has a stop rib 17 and keeper lug 18, the top rib being adapted to engage the lile on the body member to hold same in place, and the lug 18 being adapted to prevent lateral displacement of the lile 16, as illustrated in the drawings.
The Iseparate members are so arranged that when assembled the liles are held in laterally spaced downwardly converging planes, with their cutting faces oppositely disposed so that they will engage opposite edges of a knife blade, which may be drawn therethrough.
In order to hold the mating member to the body portion, I provide the former wit-h an aperture 19 and the latter with a threaded. aperture 20, so that when the parts are assembled a screw 21 may be projected through the mating member and threaded into the body member to hold the parts rigidly together. The body member is preferably provided with a bracket 22, which may be applied to the edge of a table or cabinet and has a thumb screw 23 adapted for engaging the support to lock the device thereto.
Presuming the parts to be assembled as the stop members holding the parts in such relation that the files are held at the proper angle to grind a suitable edge on the blade.
Should the files become worn they may be easily replaced by removing the mating member from the body and supplying a new pair.
It is apparent that should stones be substituted for the files and the Sharpener dipped in water to moisten the stones before the device is used, the same result may be secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. A knife Sharpener, comprising recessed keepers, each having a member projecting from the base of its recessed portion for supporting cutting members in stepped relation therein, and means on each of said keepers for clamping the cutting member of the opposite keeper to its seat.
2. A knife Sharpener, comprising recessed keepers having oppositely arranged protuberances for confining cutting members therein, and a cutting member in each keeper, each cutting member being retained in its seat by a protuberance on the keeper in which it is confined and held to its seat by a prot-uberance on the opposite keeper.
, 3. A knife Sharpener, comprising a recessed body member, having shouldered side flanges, a mating member having a lower' lip seated beneath said side flanges, and itself having anges overhanging the shoulders on the ybody member, cutting members confined within the body and mating members, and means on said body and mating members for retaining the cutters therein, and said members in converging relation, for the purpose set forth.
4. A knife Sharpener, comprising a recessed body member, having protuberances for confining a cutting member therein, and having bosses for positioning a mating member, a mating member having protuberances similar to those on the body member, cutting members confined within the body and mating members, and means for holding the body and mating members together and in downwardly converging relation, substantially as set forth.
5. A knife Sharpener, comprising a body member having a base, a curved outer lip and shouldered flanges forming a recess between the base and lip, a mating member, stops within said recess for confining a cutting member, bosses in said recess adjacent the base, a mating member having a curved outer lip and side flanges adjacent the lip forming an open bottom recess, stops on said member for confining a sharpening member Within each of said keeper members, a rail on each of the keeper members for clamping the opposite cutting member to its seat, means for rigidly connecting said body and mating members, and a clamp on said body member, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
