Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPH A. PoIRInR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at WVoonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewinghlachine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to means for feeding work to sewing machines such as are employed in the manufacture of hemstitched handkerchiefs.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the width of the hem to be produced can be regulated to a considerable extent.
The invention also contemplates the provision of such an arrangement of my im provement relative to the frame of the sewing machine that the frame can be readily tipped to permit of lubrication of the working parts under the same without the necessity of removing the hemmer from the frame.
Other advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a broken plan illustrating the arrangement of my improvement relative to the table and frame of a sewing machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail section, on the line 33 of Fig. 1, showing the manner of attaching the folder to the cross rods on the stand. Fig. t is a detail section showing the arrangement for permitting of backward swinging of the machine frame without entailing the disconnection of any element therefrom. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the folder.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The sewing machine illustrated comprises the conventional table 1, and frame 2, hinged at 3 to the table 1 in the ordinary well known manner and adapted to be swung upwardly and backwardly so as to afford access to the working parts at its underside for the convenient lubrication of said parts.
011 the frame 2 is a hemmer 4 which may be and preferably is of the ordinary, well known construction and need not, therefore, be described in detail, except to say that it has the portion 5 extended rearwardly of the table 1.
In order to obviate the necessity of disconnecting' the hemmer 4 when it is desirable to throw the machine frame 2 upwardly and backwardly as before stated I provide in advance of the folder, hereinafter described, a member 6. This member 6 normally rests over the portion 5 of the hemmer as shown. It will also be observed that the member 6 is in the form of a plate, and is provided with a longitudinally slotted portion 7, adjustably secured by a set screw 8 to a bracket 9. When it is desired to tip the machine frame 2, the screw 8 is loosened, and then the plate 6 is swung to one side so as not to interfere in any measure with the upward and backward movement of the machine frame 2 and'the hemmer 4 thereon.
The rearwardly extending portion 5 of the hemmer 4 serves as a tongue around which the hem is folded, and the member 7 when in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4, serves to form a continuation of the inwardly-extending plate or flange 17 of the folder.
Arranged adjacent the inclined machine table 1 is the stand of my improved means; the said stand being numbered 10 and being provided with a receptacle 11 for the reception of the fabric to be hemstitched. The said stand 10 is preferably, though not necessarily, of metal, and comprises sides and suitable means for connecting the said sides in fixed relation.
Disposed in vertical slots 12 in the stand sides are vertically adjustable transverse rods 13; the said rods 13 being adjustably fixed by nuts 14, Fig. 1, and being arranged in a series which is inclined in a manner generally corresponding to the inclination of the machine table 1. It will also be observed that a transverse rod 15 is extended between and supported by the stand sides and is disposed above one of the rods 13. Said rod is also vertically adjustable in and is adj ustably fixed to the stand.
A folder 16 is provided with lugs 22, Figs. 1 and 3, that straddle the two lower rods 13 and are adjustably fixed thereto by set screws 16. The said folder 16 has an inwardly extending plate or flange 17, and by virtue of the construction described it will be manifest that the said folder and its flange are adjustable in the direction of the stand-2'. 6., are adapted to be adjustably fixed at various points in the width of stand for a purpose hereinafter set forth. Arranged above the three lower rods 13 is a plate 18, which rests parallel to the lower and upper portions of the folder 16, Figs. 1 and l, and has its lower edge portion disposed on the edge of the machine table 1, Fig. 2. The said plate 18 has loops 18 Fig. 2, and in the upper and lower of said loops set screws 18 bear. When the said screws 18 are set against the adjacent rods 13, the plate 18 will be fixed to the rods, and hence the plate will be raised and lowered when the rods are raised and lowered.
Mounted and slidable on the rod 15 is a guide 19. The upper end of the said guide is provided with a hook 20 that rests over the upper cross rod 13, while the lower end of the said guide extends to a point slightly in. rear of the forward and lower edge of the plate 18. It will be observed from the foregoing that the guide 19 is susceptible of being positioned at difierent points intermediate the stand side, and that it will remain of itself in the position in which it is placed.
The folder 16, as its name imports, is designed to fold the strip of fabric into a hem, and it will be noted that the said folder extends to a point adjacent the plate 6 on the bracket 9 which bracket 9 may be and preferably is carried by an extension of the lowermost cross rod 13.
The guide 19 serves to cause the fabric to remain in the folder 16, while the overhanging hook of the guide is designed to engage the edge of the fabric before the fabric passes over the upper-most rod 13, and in that way prevent the fabric slipping under the guide and out of engagement with the inner side of the guide which serves to hold the fabric to and in the folder 16.
By virtue of the folder 16 and the plate 18 being adjustable, it will be observed that the width of the hem can be predetermined.
In other words the cloth can be folded over to a greater or less extent as occasion demands.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination of a sewing machine table, a frame hinged thereon and constructed and arranged to be swung upwardly and 'backwardly, a hemmer carried by said frame and having a portion extending rearwardly beyond the table, a folder supported in rear of the table and having an inwardly extending flange that extends forwardly to a point adjacent the said portion of the hemmer, and an adjustable plate supported in rear of the table and resting in advance of said flange of the folder and forming a continuation of the flange andalso resting over said portion of the hemmer and constructed and arranged to be moved from over the said portion of the hemmer when it is desired to swing the machine frame upwardly and backwardly. 2. In means for the purpose described, the combination of a stand, a plurality of transverse rods arranged in an inclined series and adjustable vertically in said stand, means for adjustably fixing the rods to the stand, a laterally adjustable folder secured on the lowermost of the series of rods and having an inwardly extending flange, a plate secured on the rods and arranged in lapped relation to the folder, a rod arranged transversely in the stand above the said plate, and a guide hooked over the uppermost of the series of rods and having a transverse aperture snugly receiving the last-named 0r uppermost rod.
