To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Railroad-Rail, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide a railroad rail which will not be depressed, under the weight of traffic, at the joints, the above result being accomplished by rendering the joint equal in strength and bending resistance to all other parts of the rail.
The invention aims to provide a railroad rail comprising co-acting parts, the ends of which are disposed in alternating relation, to the end that one portion of the rail may be broken, without interfering with the continuity of the rail.
It is within the scope of the invention to provide a rail, the constituent elements of which may be united without using fish plates, angle bars or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail of the type above described,
which may be fashioned at a minimum' expense.
It is within the scope of the invention, to improve and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Each rail consists of a plurality of like units, and one unit will now be described in detail. Each rail forming unit comprises a ball 1, a web 2 and a flange 3. The flange 8 is provided intermediate its ends with a lateral extension 4, the edge faces of which are inclined. The ball 1 is provided intermediate its ends with a lateral extension 5 alined vertically with the lateral extension 4 of the flange 8. As shown at 6, the web 2, intermediate its ends, is bulged, laterally, see Fig. 3, between the extensions 4 and 5, to define in the web 2, a lateral extension 7. The ends of the ball 1 are tapered as inclicated at S and the ends of the flange 3 are tapered as indicated at 9. At each end of the rail, the edge faces of the tapered portions 8 and 9 are alined vertically, and the edge faces of the portions 8 and 9 are parallel with one set of edge faces of the extensions 4 and 5. The ends of the web 2 are carried laterally as shown at 10, between the tapered extremities 8 and 9 of the ball 1 and of the flange 3 respectively. At the end of the rail forming unit, the end of the inner face of the tapered portion 8 of the ball 1, and the end of the inner face ofthe tapered portion 9 of the flange 3, and the end of the inner face of the lateral extension 10 of the web 2 lie in a common vertical line, as shown at 11.
A plurality of rail forming units, constructed as above described, are placed side by side, to form the line of track, as shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the rail forming units along one side, abut against each other, and are disposed opposite to the lateral extensions 4 and 5 of the adjoining, overlapping rail forming units. Thus, the joints are broken and a practically continuous surface is presented to the wheels of the rolling stock. The inner edges of the balls 1 abutalong a line 12, parallel to the outeredges of the balls. The inner edges of the flanges 3 abut along the line 14, parallel to the outer edge of the flanges. The extension between the balls and the flanges, serves to space the webs 2 apart, throughout the entire length of the rail, as indicated at 15.
The laterally extended ends 10 of the webs 2 of one pair of track forming units are united with the bulged intermediate portion of the unit, by means of bolts 16 or other connecting elements adapted to a like end, the use of fish plates or angle bars being rendered unnecessary.
A line of track constructed from the elements hereinbefore described, will possess great strength, and the joints will be equal in strength and bending resistance to all other parts of the rail. Further, before the wheel passes off the end of one rail forming unit, the wheel will have become engaged with the intermediate portion of an overlapping, rail forming unit, and consequently, the wheel, at no time, will traverse an unsupported joint.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. As an article of manufacture, a rail forming unit, the ball and flange of which are provided intermediate their ends with abrupt lateral projections which outstand beyond the inner faces of the ball and the flange, the ends of the ball and of the flange being abruptly tapered parallel to the projections.
2. As an article of manufacture, a rail forming unit, the ball and flange of which are provided intermediate their ends with abrupt lateral projections which outstand beyond the inner faces of the ball and the flange, the ends of the ball and of the flange being abruptly tapered parallel to the projections, the intermediate portion only of the web of the unit being bulged laterally between the projections.
3. As an article of manufacture, a rail forming unit, the ball and the flange of which are provided intermediate their ends with abrupt lateral projections which outstand beyond the inner faces of the ball and the flange, the ends of the ball and of the flange being abruptly tapered parallel to the projections, the ends only of the web of the unit being extended laterally between the tapered ends of the ball and of the flange.
4. As an article of manufacture, a rail forming unit, the ball and flange of which are provided intermediate their ends with abrupt lateral projections, the ends of the ball and of the flange being abruptly taaered parallel to the projections, the intcrmediate portion only of the web of the unit being bulged laterally between the projections, and the ends only of the web of the unit being extended laterally between the tapered ends of the ball and the flange.

As an article of manufacture, a rail forming unit, the ball and flange of which are provided intermediate their ends with abrupt lateral projections, the ends of the ball and of the flange being tapered parallel to the projections, the ends of the inner faces of the tapered portions of the ball and of the flange lying in a common plane with the end of the inner face of the unit.
