IMPROVEMENT EN BRUSHES.

To all whom it 771/601/ concern,.-

. Be\it known that I, J oIIN L. WHI'IING, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which* Figure l. denotes a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section,of a brush constructed in accordance with 'my invention.

The handle A of the said brush is furnished ,with a head, a. to receive a ferrule, B, and such handle, also, is constructed with a conical or tapering aperture, b, extending into itI from its larger end and opening` through the head a.

In the'drawings the head is exhibited as a short cylinder formed separately from the handle and having the handle tenoned into itthat is` the handle has a round tenon, c, at its-larger end, to enter a corresponding` socket or hole, d, made either partially or wholly through the head, the said head resting against the shoulder eof the tenon, and being glued or cemented or otherwise properly fastened to the tenon.

Instead of' such a method of making and applying the-handle and head, the two may be turned or formed in one piece of wood, the socket in either case going through the head and into the handle, or being made in the vhead alone, as it may be in some instances. The said socket is to receive a wedged tapering or conical expander, O, which, on being driven smaller end foremost into the central part of the mass D of bristles, (when arranged in the ferrule in manner as represented,) and also into the socket b, and glued or cemented in the latter or to the handle or head, or both, will not only serve to expand the mass of bristles into the ferrule, but operate as a dovetail to hold them in place. The

mass of bristles, before being inserted in the ferrule, may be dipped in cement where they are to enter the ferrule.

I am aware that in making a brush it has been customary to have a tapering expander extend from the handle, and with the base of the expander toward and fixed to the handle, the same being as represented in the United States Patent N o. 39,439, dated August 4, 1863, and reissued on December 15, 1868, such patent having been granted to me.

In the brush shown in such patent the expander has to be driven into the upper end of the mass of bristles, Whereas in my improved brush the expander enters the mass of bristles at its lower end and is driven up toward the handle, from which it is separate, and is then or subsequently to be fixed thereto by cement or other proper means.

Vith my improved arrangement of the expander, the bristles will be muchl more rmly held in place in the ferrule than when the smaller end or point of theexpander is directed` toward the points ofthe mass of bristles.

I herein make no claim to the brush made as represented and described in the aforesaid patent.

Vha-t I do claim, as anew manufacture and as my invention, is-

The improved brush, constructed as described and represented-viz., with the expander made separate from the handle and arranged in a socket therein, or in its head, or in bothhead and handle, and driven, with its larger end outward, into the bristles in a direction toward the handle, the whole being essentially as shown in the accompanying drawings.
