ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 9, 1912. Serial No. 730,43l.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX M. CoHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piedmont, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in En'velops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelops and particularly to window envelops, or .envelops having a window portion through which the name and address on an inclosure may show through.
The object of the present invention isto enable the manufacture of commercial envelops from opaque stock, to aportion of which a transparency forming preparation has been applied, and in conjunction with this transparency to puncture the envelop around the window, thus formed, in such fashion as to give definition to the window and at the same time allow the air to escape from the envelop, so that the transparency will lie close against the inclosure and render the addressees name and address to'be easily read.
It is well recognized both by users of the window envelops now on the market, and particularly by the Post Oflice employees and ofiicials, that it is often diflicult to quickly read the name and address on the inclosure, through the transparency, by reason of the air gap between the transparency and the inclosure, particularly where the transparency is not well formed, or clear. As a rule the letter has to be taken in the hands or laid on a table, and the transparency pressed down on top of the writing beneath, so as to read the name and destination of the sendee. Of course in the Post Ofiice this occasions delay, and seriously interfereswith public business. In the pres-' In connection with this invention, reference is made to my prior Patent #885,850, simply by way of illustration of the prior state of the art, and to show wherein the presentinvention differstherefrom. Like in said patent, I take a blank sheet of paper, or an envelop 'blank A, of suitable strength and texture and apply to a portion of one side of the blank a preparation which has the property of rendering transparent the portion to which it is applied. This envelop blank is of ordinary opaque stock, and in forming the transparent portion, I employ any suitable compound or preparation,
such as paraffin-oil and resin, or a grease which produces the desire result of rendering the portion of the paper to which it is applied, transparent. This transparency, or window, is of the desired shape'and size so as to permit the name and address on an inclosure to show through. Around this window the blank A is perforated, as shown at 3. These perforations have the double function of giving definition to the window, and also of allowing the air confined in the envelop to escape, so that the window 2 will always lie practically fiat against the inclosure, and permit the name and address on the inclose to be plainly legible at all times.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, an. envelop of relatively opaque stock having a flap for closing the same and confining an Patented July 29, 191 3.
inclosure may be observed, said wall being provided with a series of perforations therethrough around the transparent area to give definition to the window and permit of the escape of air from the space between the wall and the inclosure.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence, of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX M. COHN.
