ALICE URILLA DAVIS, OF EL PASO, TEXAS PAPER-GUIDE.
rooaaea,
1 0 alt QU/LOIII/ it may concern,
lie it known that l, Arron U. Davis, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 01 El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Guide, of which the following is a r'ull, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to improvements in the construction of paper guides as disclosed in a patent oi the United States granted to me under date of October 8, 1912, for paper guides, said patent being numbered 1,040,901.
The principal. object which the present invention has in view is to provide means whereby the guide may be folded when not in service position, to permit covering the typewriting machine to Which. said guide is attached, in the usual. manner.
leference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part oi this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 a side elevation of the upper fragment ot a typewriting machine, showing the platen roller and paper guide thereof, constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan. view of a paper guide constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, shown in conjunction with the apron of the usual t-ypewriting machine; .Fig. 3 is a detail. view, on an enlarged scale, showing one of the supporting arms e1nployed by me in the construction of my paper guide; Figs. 1: and. 5 are detail views, enlarged scale, showing blanks from on an which the hinge sections or the present paper guide are formed.
As seen in the accoi'npanying drawings, the holding bar 10 is superposed upon a rest-bar 11, being held in position thereon by screws 12, the heads of which are adapted to passthrough the enlarged portions oi eyelets 13 formed in the ends ot the holding bar 10. The holding bar 10 is ad justed in service position by a linger-hold or handle 14-. The holding bar 10 and the rest bar 11 are held in adjusted position upon bracket bars 1.5 when united, by means of clamp nuts 1.6, which are mounted on screws 17 extending from the side oi the rest-bar 11 and through the slots 18 01 said bars 15.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 727,141.
The more detailed construction and operation of the holding and. rest-bars 10 and 11, with the nuts and screws connected there with, is given in the patent above referred to, to which cross reference is here made.
in service, the extension of the side bars 15 may provide for paper of unusual length, and for this purpose may he elongated to project beyond the rear 01' the typewriting machine to which the paper guide is attached.
l l hen the bracket bars 15 are constructed as shown in the patent above referred to, it becomes necessary to remove the paper guide when desired to cover or otherwise house the typenu'iting machine. in the present invention, this is avoided by providing the bracket arms 15 with attaching sections 19, which sections are rigidly secured by means of screws 20, to the apron 21 of the typewriting machine. The section 19 and the bracket bars 15 are pivotally connected by means of pivot pins 29-, which extend through hinge tabs 23 and The hinge tabs 25, as seen best in Fig. 5 ot the drawings, are formed integrally with the brackets 15, and are turned up from the blank shown in said Fig. 5, to have perpendicular extension from the body of the arm. The tabs 24L are termed integrally with the body of the sections 19, said tabs being turned upward in the blank at an angle perpendicular to the body of the sections 19.
To avoid the lateral extension beyond the sides of the bars 15 oil the double thickness of metal of the tabs 23 and 2 1;, the tabs are at their base partially severed or inset from the edge oft the sections 19, the cuts being shown in Fig. 1- as indicated by the nui'neral 25. The outside surfaces 01 the tabs 24 are by Jason oi this construction flush with the edges of the sections 19, and lit snugly between. the upturned tabs 23, the inner surfaces of which are coincident with the edges of the bar 1:") and section 19. In service position, the bracket bars 15 are suspended trom the ends of the sections 19, each of said bars being provided with a tailpiece so, which tailpieces strike under the sections 15), to form stop members to regulate the service angle 01 the paper guide. By bending the tailpieces 26, the relative angle of the bars 15 and the sections 19 may be varicd.
in the operation of the device for holding and. guiding paper, as disclosed in the patcut above referred to, when constructed as abovedescribed, the device is folded, the brackets 15 turning upon the pins 22 over the platen roll and body of the typewriting machine. Vhen thus disposed, the parts of the paper guide rest within the boundary of the typewriting machine, to permit the introduction thereover of the ordinary cover, or to allow for the storage of a typewriting machine thus equipped, within the ordinary drop-top desk without striking the same.
Havin thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A paper guide such as described, having a plurality of bracket arms, comprising two hinged sections to permit said paper guide to be folded upon a typewriting machine.
2. In a paper guide such as described; a plurality of bracket arms, comprising a plurality of hinged sections, said sections being provided with stop members to impinge upon the juxtaposed sections to control the relative angle thereof.
A paper guide such as described, comprising a plurality of flat metal sections pivotally connected, one of said sections having a tailpiece adjacent the pivotal connection to rest under the adjacent section to maintain the relative angle of said sections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
