DNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER S. ADAMS AND GEORGE B. KOHLER, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO THE J". Gr. BRILL COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SASI-I-LOGK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER S. AnAMs and Gnoneu B. Koi-rnnn, citizens of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to make a simple and substantial lock or bolt for holding the sash of a car window.
A further object of the invention is to construct the device so that a horizontal spring bolt can be used in connection with a sash lift, which enables the bolt to be first withdrawn and the sash raised.
In the accompanying drawings z Figure 1, is a perspective view of our improved sash lock; Fig. 2, is a side view; Fig. 3, is a rear view; and Fig. 4, is a transverse sectional view on. the line 4-4, Fig. 2.
A is the plate which is secured to the sash in any suitable manner, and B is the bolt which is projected from one end of the plate and enters a. socket in the window frame. This bolt is mounted in a bearing a at the forward end of the plate A and this bearing has a projection a which passes through a slot in the sash so that the bolt is supported. at the extreme end of the sash, making it impossible to bend the bolt in the effort to lift the sash from the outside. The bolt also passes through openings in two lugs c, 0 projecting from the back of the plate A and between one of the lugs 0 and a shoulder Z) on the bolt B is a spring E, which tends to project the bolt out as this is the normal position of the bolt in this class of locks.
Secured to the bolt B is. an arm D which projects through the inclined slot 7 in the enlarged portion A of the plate A. The outer end of this arm D is enlarged to form a thumb-hold. Projecting from the portion A is the sash lift a which is engaged by the fore finger of the hand in lifting the sash.
Specification of Letters Patent.

hen the arm D is moved down it travels on the inclined casing as a cam to withdraw the bolt against the pressure of the spring so that when the bolt is withdrawn the sash can be raised without removing the hand from the bolt structure. As soon as the arm D is released from the control of the thumb, the spring projects the bolt and as the sash is moved up or down the bolt will travel on the face of the slideway in the frame until it is projected into a. socket.
Thus it will be seen by the above construction that we make a very simple and substantial sash lock, which is combined with a sash lift so that the bolt can be withdrawn and the sash raised by the same hand. On the opposite side of the sash there may be simply a plain sash lift or rail which is applied to large windows, or there may be a combined bolt and sash lift at each side of the sash.
We claim:
In a. combined sash lift and bolt, the combination of a. flat plate having a lip projecting from the face thereof and forming the sash lift; a curved projection above the lift integral with the plate and having a diagonal slot therein; bearings at the back of the plate; a longitudinal bolt adapted to the bearings; an arm secured to the bolt and extending through the diagonal slot in the curved projection; the arm being enlarged at its outer end above the sash lift to form a thumb hold; and a spring encircling the bolt and bearing against a shoulder on the bolt and one of the bearings, whereby the bolt is projected when the arm is released.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
