nature of a book stand which is to be used to hold a book or magazine while the reader lies in bed and reads.

The object of the device is to enable the reader to have the book before him in the proper place and not have to hold the book.

The device is so improved and constructed that it is adjustable throughout. It can be adjusted on the bed rail at any desired point, giving the book any desired distance from the readers eyes. The book can be raised and lowered by means of an adjustable vertical post. The book holder proper can be widened to hold a book of any ordinary width. On each end of the book holder is a screw with an extended arm which when screwed down tight on the book holds the pages down. The book holder proper has a base on which the book rests, extending both front and back so that the device can be turned around and used on either the left or right hand side of the bed. The device has no legs or base and hence takes up no floor space when in use. It can be left in place on the bed both day and night without inconvenience to neces sary house work.

E designates a right angled member having the shape of the letter F, the vertical stem being vertically slidable in a tubular post D, which is mounted in a clamping sleeve F. A set screw (Z, is fitted in a screw threaded hole in the post D, and is adapted to bear against the stem E, for the purpose of holding said stem in the position to which it may be adjusted. The upper laterally extending arm of the right angled member E, is tubular and is disposed parallel with and above a flat horizontal tubular stationary platform portion A, which is adapted to serve as a book rest.

A U-shaped member 13, has its two arms respectively slidable in the horizontal portion of the member E, and in the platform portion A. Said horizontal portion has mounted therein a thumb screw 6, which is adapted to bear against the upper one of the A set screw '5, is mounted in the book rest A, and is adapted to bear against the lower arm of the U- shaped member B. By loosening the set screws 6, i, and (Z, the device may be raised or lowered and expanded or contracted so as to clamp any desired width of book and support it in the proper position.

To hold the book in the open position, I provide two clamping screws m, and n, which are mounted in screw threaded holes in the vertical portions of the members E, and B, and which are provided respectively with lateral arms or, and 3 by which the leaves are held clamped in the open position. If desired, the screws on, and a, may be reversed as to their positions in the holes in which they are mounted so that the book may be supported on the platform A, at either side of the member E.

It will be obvious that the device may be clamped to either bed rail and in the position shown in the drawing or in a diametrically opposite position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A book support having a vertical stem, provided with two horizontal, parallel, tubular arms, disposed one above the other, the lower arm serving as a shelf for sup porting the lower end of the book, a U- shaped member having its two arms slidably mounted in said tubular arms respectively, leaf clamping means provided respectively on said vertical stem and on said U-shaped member, a vertical tubular post in which the stem is vertically adjustable, and means by which said post may be clamped to a bed rail.

2. A book support having a vertical stem provided with two parallel, lateral, tubular arms disposed one above the other, the lower arm serving as a shelf for supporting the lower end of the book, a U-shaped member having its arms slidably mounted in tubular arms respectively, and means by which the leaves of a book may be held clamped in the open position when the book rests upon said shelf at either side of said stem.

3. A vertically extensible book support, provided with means for being clamped to a bed rail, said book support being horizontally extensible to adapt it to different widths of books, said book support having a book supporting shelf extending laterally at opposite sides of a vertical plane, and means for clamping the leaves of a book in the open position when the book is supported on said shelf at either side of said vertical plane.
