IMPROVEMENT INA CAR-COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

Be it known that I, J AMES H. FBOMAN, of Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton and State of'Missouri, have invented a new and improved'Oar-Goupling'; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof', which will enable ethers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw. ing forming part of thisspecication.

My invention relates to car-couplings, and consists in certain improvements which will be lfirst described in connect-ion with all that is necessary to afull understanding thereof', and then speciiied in the suinrnary or claim.
The inventionconsists in constructing a car-coupling of two main jaws, A and B, which have rounded flaring front ends, so as to produce a bell mouth on the coupling.
The jaws A B are'metal bars, which, at their rear ends are rmly clamped to the frame ot the car, and which constitute 'sp1-ings, whereby their kfront ends are held together.
To the upper jaw A is pivoted a lever, C, which,
won- 'when swung up, as in fig. 2, will press against the lower jaw and force the same apart.
The coupling link D is a bar with arrow-head ends.-
The same, when insert-ed between the jaws, will catch behind shoulders a a, as shown in fig. 1, and will thereby be held and locked.
The link, if it should be violently swung up, down, or to Aeither side, will force the jaws apart, and become uncoupled.
b is a strip or spring, arranged with one end. restingunder the link, and turning on the summit of the incline, which is upon the -bott-om jaw B, as a fulcrum. Y Y

der the further end of strip, as in fig. 1, or it may be dispensed with, as in tig. 2(
A loop, link, or other device is employed to hold the strip in position.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The jaw B, beveled, as shown in ligures of drawing,.and the spring b, fitting np to the shoulder u, combined with an upper jaw A, having the pivoted lever, O passing therethrough, as' and for the` purpose specified.
