To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. ROBERT M. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cadillac, county of \Vexford, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt Gages and Markers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in skirt gages and markers.

The objects of the invention are to provide an effective structure which can be used by any person marking a garment, the structure being especially intended for home use by a woman doing her own dressmaking.

Objects which pertain to details and economies of construction will definitely appear from the detailed description.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Figure I is a perspective view of my improved device, as it appears in use in the marking of a skirt, a portion of the skirt being torn away and portions of the device being broken to show details of construction. Fig. II is a plan view of the structure of about full size. Fig. III is an elevation view from the left hand of Fig. II, a portion of the marking and scale plate being broken away. Fig. IV is a side elevation View from the lower side of Fig. II. Fig. V is a detail elevation view of the parts appearing in Fig. IV from the upper side of Fig. II. Fig. VI is a detail elevation view show ing the scale portion.

In the drawing, similar numerals of ref erence refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, the base 1 is of sheet metal and carries an upright square standard 2, on which is an adjustable bracket 8, adjustable by means of the set screw 4:, which is provided with the horizontal shelf or plate 5 which has an upturned lug 6 at its farther end. On this plate or shelf 5 is supported the chalk holder 7 containing a slot 9, which embraces pivot 8 on said shelf.

Specification of Letters Patent.

A spring 10 is connected to an upturned lug 11 on said holder, and connects the same to the upwardly projecting stop lug 6, and serves to hold the chalk holder yieldingly in the inoperative position against said step. A portion of the chalk holder is folded upon itself to form jaws 12, and a set screw 13 therethrough engages the marking chalk l l, which is thus effectively held in place by the chalk holder.

A cord 15 is connected at 15 to the pivoted chalk holder and passes through an eyelet 15 in the bracket 3, thence downwardly through an eyelet 16 in the base, and thence upwardly to the hand of the user, so that by a pull upon the cord the chalk holder will be swung or reci irocated to the skirt or other garment at the required height.

A marking plate 17 is formed by the upturned end of the base 1, which is folded back upon itself at 18 to give an extra support. The central portion of this plate is roughened at 20 and is covered by fabric 19. This plate 17 is placed within the skirt and affords a support for the skirt when it is being marked by the chalk.

A scale 22 is on the side of this plate, so that the exact height from the door of the marking can be determined.

From this description it will be seen that the device is very readily used, as indicated in Fig, I. A weight of some kind, Such as a flatiron or a chair leg, or something of that kind, may be placed on the base to support the structure when in use. When the device has been thus secured and the chalk holder has been adjusted to the right position. the person using the same turns around so that the skirt or other garment hangs in front of the plate 17 and the string is pulled and by that means the chalk is caused to mark the garment, so that it is marked an equal height all the way around. The chalk marks readily across the garment, owing to the fact that the holder is held yieldingly in position by means of the spring 10, and the chalk holder is allowed to slide back freely on the pin 8, which is disposed in the slot 9 as already referred to, so that the structure operates very readily and very easily, properly marking the skirt of any garment that it may be swung against.

The invention is capable of many modi fications.

I desire to claim my invention specifically as shown and also broadly as appears in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is: i e w V 1. In a skirt gage and marker, the combination of a suitable base, an upright plate supported thereby provided with a roughened surface covered with fabric, and provided with a suitable scale, a suitable standard secured to the base, adjustable bracket on the said standard, having a horizontal shelf, a suitable chalk holder disposed on said shelf, containing a longitudinal slot, a pin on the said shelf disposed in the said slot whereby the said holder can swing and play freely, and a spring holding the said chalk holder yieldingly in its normal inoperative position, a cord connected to the said chalk holder, and suitable guiding eyelets in the bracket and in the base through which said cord is passed, thence upwardly to the hand of the user, all coacting substantially and for the purpose specified.

In a skirt gage and marker, the combination of a suitable base, an upright plate supported thereby with a roughened surface covered with fabric, a suitable standard secured to the base, adjustable bracket on the said standard, having a horizontal shelf, a suitable chalk holder disposed on said shelf, containing a longitudinal slot, a pin on the said shelf disposed in the said slot whereby the said holder can swing and play freely, and a spring holding the said cha k holder yieldingly in its normal inoperative position, a cord connected to the said chalk holder, and guiding eyelets in the bracket and in the base, through which said cord is passed thence upwardly to the hand of the user, all coacting substantially and for the purpose specified.

3. In a skirt gage and marker, the combination of a suitable base, an upright plate, a suitable standard secured to the base, ad-

bracket on the said standard, having a horizontal shelf, a suitable chalk holder disposed on said shelf containing a just able longitudinal slot, a pin on the said shelf disposed in the said slot whereby the said holder can swing and play freely, and a springholding the said chalk holder yieldingly in its normal inoperat1ve position, a cord connected to the said chalk holder, and guiding eyelets in the bracket" and in the base, through which said cord is passed, thence upwardly to the hand of the user, all coacting substantially and for the purpose specified.

4. In a skirt gage and marker, the combination of a suitable base, an upright plate, a suitable standard secured to the base, adjustable bracket on the said standard, having a horizontal shelf, a suitable chalk holder disposed on said shelf, containing a longitudinal slot, a pin on the said shelf disposed in the said slot whereby the said holder can swing and play freely, and a spring holding the said chalk holder yieldingly in its normal inoperative position, and means to actuate said chalk holder against the force of the spring, all coacting substantially and for the purpose specified.

5. In a skirt gage or marker, the combination of a suitable base, an upright plate, a suitable standard, a bracket adjustably supported on said standard, a suitable chalk holder normally in an inoperative position with yielding flexible connections pivoted to said bracket, and an actuating cord connected to said chalk holder through a suitable guiding eyelet on the said bracket for said cord, coacting for the purpose specified.
