To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT l). TI-IRONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubular lianterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tubular lantern which is provided with a chimney eX- tending upwardly from the globe into an air-inlet chamber with which the upper ends of the tubes are connected and in which lantern this chimney is composed of an upper stationary part which is secured in said chamber and a lower partl which is vertically movable in the upper part and which bears upon the globe and holds the latter in position.
The object of this invention is to provide the chimney with means for limiting the downward movement of the movable part in order that the latter may not be pushed out of the stationary part if the lifter or other device which connects the movable part of the chimney with the lantern top should become disconnected.

Fig. 3 is a similar vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the lower part of the chimney raised. F ig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section, showing a means for securing the npper stationary part of the chimney in the lantern top.

A. represents the oil font, B t-he air chamber on the same, C the burner, D the globe supporting plate, E the globe, F the globe lifter shaft, and G the air tubes, all of any well known or suitable construction.
Tl represents the top chamber to which the upper ends of the tubes are connected and which comprises a top plate 10, an upright peripheral wall 11 having openings 12 near said top plate, an internal flange 121 arranged below said openings and above the tubes, and a bottom flange 13.
T represents the upper stationary part of the chimney which is secured in the top ch amber H with its upper end opposite the mouths of the air tubes, which upper end is provided with an outwardly projecting flange lei. This part of the chimney is secured in the top chamber by any suitable means, for instance, by soldering, or, as shown in TEig. el, by being secured with its flange between an inwardly projecting bead 15 formed in the peripheral wall of the chamber and projections 16 formed in said wall below said flange.
K represents the lower part of the chimney which is vertically movable in the upper stationary part and is pressed downwardly by a spring 17 to bear upon the globe and hold the latter in position. This lower part of the chimney is provided with a litter bar 18 which extends through the top plate of the lantern top and is connected at its lower end with the chimney by any suitable means, for instance, by an upright loop or hook 19 which engages a cross bar 2O secured in the lower part ot' the chimney.
The globe plate is preferably connected with the lifter shaft F for raising and lowering the plate and globe and the loop 19 of the litter bar 18 permits this to be done without projecting the bar above its normal position.
The upper stationary part of the chimney is provided at its lower edge with an inwardly projecting bead or flange 22 in which the lower movable part of the chimney moves up or down and this movable part is provided at its upper edge with a bead or flange 23 which projects outwardly over the flange 2Q. These flanges or beads form a stop device which limits the downward movement of the movable part of the chimney and prevents the latter from being pushed out of the stationary part if the lifter bar or other parts which hold the movable part of' the chimney in the lantern top should become disconnected. These flanges also form guides or lateral supports by which the movable part of the chimney is held in an upright position during its movements as well as in its various positions.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a tubular lantern, the combination with an air tube and an air chamber connected with the upper end thereof, of' a telescopic chimney comprising an upper stationary part having its open upper end arhaving an inwardly projecting bottom flange, and a lower part which is verticalli7 movable in said upper part andv provided with a top iange which projects outwardly over the flange on said upper part7 substantially as set forth.
