RECEPTACLE FOR MEMORANDUM-CARDS.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Application filed January 22, 1912. Serial No. 672,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLARD W. Dow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Receptacles for Memorandum-Cards, of which the following isv a specification.
This invention relates to a receptacle for memorandum cards, and has for its object the construction of a receptacle having a tray adapted to contain a pile of blank memorandum cards of a size corresponding approximately to the dimensions of the tray, and having one or more compartments adapted to receive cards when memoranda have been written thereon, one of the dimensions of said compartments being approximately the same as one of the dimensions of the cards, and another dimension of said compartments being less than the other dimension of the cards, so that the cards when placed in said compartments Will project above the top thereof, to serve as a visual indicating-device to call attention to their presence. In case two compartments are employed one of them may be made of a length to correspond with the length of the cards, but of a depth less than the width of the cards, and the other may be made of a length corresponding to the width of the cards and of a depth less than the length of the cards. For convenience, the receptacle will have provision. for a calendar, and, in such case, one of the compartments may be employed to receive the calendar, the front wall of said compartment having an opening in front of the calendar, and means are provided, such for instance, as a spring to hold the calendar against the front wall of the compartment, so that a clear space is afforded back of the calendar to receive the cards, and the means employed to hold the calendar in its forward position willbe such as to admit of the cards being easily placed in the compartment, back of the calendar, and the means employed to hold the calendar in its forward position may also be employed to hold the cards in the compartment.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a card-recep- 'acle embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on the dotted line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a modification to be referred to.
The receptacle comprises essentially a horizontal base 12, an upright front wall 13, an upright rear wall 14-, upright side walls 15, 16, and transversely disposed partition walls 17 and 18, arranged between the side Walls. The rear portion 19 of the base 12 is built up to a point substantially flush with the top of the front portion of the side walls 15, 16, and with the top of the front wall 13, to form a tray at the forward part of the receptacle to contain a pile of blank cards, which are represented at 20. The middle of the front wall is cut away, as best shown in Fig. 2, whereby convenient access may be had to the cards contained in the tray. The tray is made oblong, and the cards contained in it are of approximately the same dimensions as the tray, to fit loosely therein.
I At the rear part of the receptacle the rear wall 14E and side walls 15, 16, and partition wall 17, extend upward to form a compartment to receive the cards on which memoranda have been made. This compartment is of substantially the same length as the tray, so that the cards may be placed therein lengthwise, but is of less depth than the width of the tray and of the cards, so that when the cards are placed therein they will project a short distance above the top thereof, as represented in Fig. 3, and their presence thereby visually indicated. As here shown, the portion 19 of the base forms the bottom of said compartment, and the rear wall, side walls and partition wall 17 extend upward from said bottom the required distance, but I do not limit my invention to constructing the base in this manner to form the compartment, as it may be otherwise constructed, as for instance as shown in Fig. 4:, the portion 19 is omitted but the rear wall, side walls and partition wall are substantially the same as in Fig. 3, and the compartment which is formed is of adepth less than one of the dimensions of the cards or slips. In this modification of my invention the compartment is simply arranged at a lower level than in Fig. 3.
The front side of the partition wall 17 is arranged obliquely to the perpendicular and the partition wall 18 is arranged in parallel therewith, but a short distance therefrom, so that a space is provided between them to form another compartment. This compartment is desi ned to contain a calendar, represented at 2 and the partition Wall 18 has an opening through it in front of the calendar. It is furthermore designed to use this compartment to receive cards having special memoranda written thereon, hence a spring 25 or some equivalent means is arranged in said compartment to press the calendar against the rear side of the partition Wall 18, see Fig. 3, thereby to provide a space back of the calendar for the cards. Said spring is arranged as shown whereby its upper end will not obstruct the easy entrance of the cards into the compartment, and, furthermore, said spring acts to hold the cards which are placed in the compartment. This compartment is made of a length to correspond with the width of the cards and of a depth less than the length of the cards, so that the cards will be placed therein by an endwise movement.
The convenience of this device is apparent, and its importance is appreciated by those who use memorandum cards or slips, as the cards having memoranda thereon are not only held in a place especially provided for them, but are visible so that their presence is indicated.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for I claim As a new article of manufacture, a receptacle for memorandum cards having a horizontal compartment of greater length than width and open at the top and one side, adapted to contain a stack of blank memo randum cards and having two vertical cardreceiving compartments open at the top, one of which is made short to correspond with the width of the horizontal compartment and the other of which is made long to correspond with the length of the horizontal compartment whereby the memorandum cards taken from the horizontal compartment may be placed endwise in the short compartment and lengthwise in the long compartment, the walls of said compartments being fixed to form permanent compartment-s for the cards.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
