JAMES V. .COOK AND EDWARD Jt CRSSMAN, 0F AUBURN, NEW YORK.
Leners Pare-nt N .106,783, dated Mgmt 3o, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'SCAFFOLDING To lill whomI it may concern:
Be it known that we, J Lruns V. COOK, and ED- WARD J. CROSSMAN, of Auhurn,'in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaliolding; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference heilig had' to' the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which'forms :t part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of' ajseatlbld for Ina'sons, plasterers, painters, and ,mechanics in 'genera-l, 'as will he herein fully set forth.
V1n order to ,enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and ilse the saines, we will now proceedto describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figurel isa side view, and
Figure 2 an end view. g
vThe end-pieces Av A of our scaffolding iare cornposed of two upright legs, a a/,conne'cted by means of a top slat or bar, b, and another bnr, d, a suitable distance above their lower end.
The end-pieces A A are then connected together hy means of two horizontal parallel bars, b, and on the bars d d of the end-pieces is laid a plank, C, which rims in aninclined position, as seen in tig. l, the fsaid hars d d not beingat the same h' ighti'rom the ground for this purpose. This constitutes the frame .of our scaffolding.
At each end of the. frame thus formed arev placed two lifts, D D', a rod, e, passing through their-lower ends, and through the side-bars B B.
The lifts D-D are constructed each of two pieces of timber, bolted together at their upper ends so to form an inverted V, as shown in tig. 2. The lift 1)-is made so in uch 'smalle-r that it will tit inside of the larger lift 1).` There may, of course, be more than two lifts, it' so desired, thej,r being made of diiferent sizes so as tolit within each other.
Surroundinggt-he rod e, between the ends ofthe in-' ner lift, is a. tulle, f. with a washer at euch end, und there is also a washer between the lifts, and between the outside lift and the side-beam B.-
'Ihe upper4 ends of the lifts D 1) are notched', as shownin tig. 2, and a cross-bar, G, gained at each end, is inserted or laid in said notches or slots, which holds either set of lifts in an upright position. When in this position they restagainst the cross-,bar b of the end-pieces A A.
When not in use the lifts are turned down to rest upon the plank C, which, being inclined, admits the lifts at both ends to be turned down.
Having thus fully describedour invention,
. lVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the frame A C, lifts l) D',
-and upper crosssbar G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that weclaii'n the foregoing as our vown," we n'ix our signatures in presence ot' two witnesses.
JAMES V.GOOK. EDWARD J. OROSSMAN.
