Description

. F. E. WILLIAMS. REINFOBOIN-G DEVICE FQRTHB BACKS OF PAPER COVERED BOOKS. APPLICATION FILED APR. so, 1912.
1,067,704; Patented July 15, 1913:
a? I W *5 FRANK E. WILLIAMS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BEINFORCING DEVICE FOR THE PACKS OF PAPER-COVERED BOOK S.
Specification of Letters Patent. 4
Patented July 15, 1913.
Application filed April 36, 1912. Serial No. 694,221.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK EDWIN WIL- LIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reinforcing Devices, for the Backs of Paper-Covered Books, of which the following is a specification.
In the use of magazines and like books having paper covers, the covers commence to tear at the ends of the back of the cover and become defaced and torn, and soon the whole cover comes off.
It is the object of my invention to provide a reinforcement of the cover at the ends of the back which will prevent the cover from becoming torn at this point.
A further object is to provide additional means to fasten the cover to the signatures forming the book signatures being the bunches of sheets containing the reading matter.
I- accomplish these objects by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a paper covered book provided with my improved reinforcing device. Fig. 2 is a view of the device befo 'e it is attached to the book. Fig. 3 shows di erently cut signature flaps.
My device preferably consists of a flap or outside portion 5 and a shorter flap or inside portion 6 made from a single piece of material, such as cloth or tough paper. lVhen positioned for use the parts will be folded on each other on the dotted line 77 and that portion which is included between the dotted lines 8-8 and 99 will be at the back of the signatures, and the central portions of the ends of the cover will lie therebetwecn and be pasted thereto except at the.
signature flaps. Signature flaps 10 and 11 are cut out of the inner portion 6 and when positioned for use are The remainder of the material is being on the outside and the inner portion- 6 on the inner side and is pasted thereto before the cover is put on the signatures. The signature flaps are pasted to the signat-ures at the same time the cover is put on.
By this device the cover is prevented from being torn and defaced at the ends of the back and when it is opened out the "flaps provide an additional bond between the cover and signatures.
Having described my invention What I claim is:
1. A reinforcing device for paper covered books comprising a strip of material folded on itself forming outer and inner flaps, the central portions of the ends of the cover being positioned therebetween and pasted thereto except at the signature flaps when positioned for use; and signature flaps p'ar tially severed from the inner cover flaps, said signature flaps being pasted to the sides of the outer ends of the signatures when positioned for use.
2. As a new article of manufacture a reinforcing device for the backs of paper covered books comprising outer and inner flaps formed of a strip of material folded on itself and having the central portions of the cover therebetween when positioned for use and being pasted to the outer and inner end portions of the cover; and signature flaps partially severed from the inner flaps, said signature flaps being pasted to the signatures when positioned for use.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 24th day of April, 1912.
FRANK E. WILLIAMS. lVitnesses G. E. Hanrlmir,
FRANK 'Wn'rnnrinw.
