WHIP SOCKET. APPLICATION FILED IBB.17, 1913.

CULLEN 'I'. FUNK, OF HARTVILLE, OHIO.
WHIP-SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 17, 1913.
Patented July 8, 1913.
Serial No. 748,769.
To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, (human T. FUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartville, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVhip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in whip sockets in which the whip socket proper is to be attached in the usual manner to the dash board of a vehicle.
The objects of the present invention are, first, to provide means for holding the whip in an upright position and locking the whip in the socket, and second, to provide means for easily releasing the whip from the socket. These objects together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, althoiilgh my invention may be embodied in a variety of other n'lechanical iliOl'lllS, the construction illustrated being shown by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing part oi? the lock case broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the lock case removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the socket showing transverse sections of the rock bars, and end views of the whip locking plates. Fig. i is a side elevation of the whip socket shown in a different position from that shown in l i 1, 9. and 8, showing a portion of the lock casing broken away.
Similar numerals of reference indicate correspmiding parts in all the figures oi? the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the whip socket which may be of any desired form, reference being had to placing the butt-end of the whip in the socket and attaching the different parts designed"to hold and lock the whip. The whip socket 1 is secured in any convenient and well known manner to the dash board of a vehicle or its equivalent. The device employed to attach the whip socket to the dash board of a vehicle being common and well understood by those skilled in the art, no illustration or description of said parts is deemed necessary.
To the bottom or lower portion of the whip socket 1 are pivotally attached the bars 2, which bars are extended upward and beyond the top of the socket 1 a su'tlicient distance to be easily grasped by the hand. In the Whi p socket 1. are journalcd the rock bars 3 to which rock bars are securely at tached in any convenient and well known manner the whip holding and gripping blades 1, said blades being located in suitable openings 5 formed in the body of the whip socket 1. The rock bars 3 are provided with the cranks (l, which cranks are located through the openings 7 formed in the bars 2. It will be understood that by providing the cranks 6 and locating them through the openings 7 a rocking movement will be imparted to the rock bars when the bars or lovers 2 are moved upon their pivotal points 8.
"When it is desired to use the whip socket without any reference to the locking of the whip the lock bolt 9 is brought into a low cred position and in the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1 and when in this po sition the whip can be placed in the socket, the butt-end of the whip passing the lock blades i, said blades being turned downward and outward by reason of theiiyinner edges coming in contact with the whip, but after the whip has been placed in the socket it cannot be detached without pressing the bars or levers 2 toward .tIOll other, and when pressed toward each other the locking blades are thrown outward or away from the whip shank after which the whip can be easily witlulrawn. It will be understood that the lever 2 and the whip can be grasped by the hand and the lovers pressed toward each other, after which the whip can be lifted.
For the purpose ot automatically forcing the levers Q away from each otln. and at the. same time causing the whip holding blades l to press against the shank of the whip the spring 10 is provided, which spring is so constriu-lcd and located that it will press the levers or bars outward and when said levers are pressed toward each other by the hand they will automatically assume their normal positions when released.
In some instances it may be desi able to lock the whip in the socket thereby preventing the whip i'rom being witlulrawn by persons inclined to secure a whip without paying the price, and in order to provide for locking the whip, the socket 1 is provided with a lock 11, which look may be oi? any desired construction, but of such a cmistruelion that the lock bolt 9 will be moved by the use of a key and when said lock bolt is brought into its elevated position the head 12 will come between the cranks 6, thereby preventing any movement of the cranks and at the same time prevent the levers 2 from being pressed toward each other, thereby preventing the withdrawal of the Whip until the same is released by the person having authority to do so. The lock 11 has not been described in detail and the lock so far as its specific construction is concerned does not enter into the spirit of the present invention.
For the purpose for holding the spring 10 in proper position the staple 13 is pro-I vided which staple is connected to the socket 1 in the usual manner. It will be understood that other means may be employed for connecting the spring as it is immaterial as to how the spring is held.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a whip socket, the combination of a socket, bars pivotally connected to said. socket and extended upward and beyond the top thereof, said bars provided with openings intermediate their ends, ro-ckbars journaled in the socket, said rock bars provided with cranks, said cranks located through the openings, whip holding and gripping blades secured to said rock bars and means for locking the pivoted bars against movement, substantially as specified. 2. In a whip socket, the combination of a socket, bars pivotally connected to said socket and extended upward and beyond the top thereof, said bars provided with open ings intermediate their ends, rock-bars journaled in the socket, said rock-bars provided with cranks, said cranks located through the openings, whip holding and gripping blades secured to said rock-bars, means for locking the pivoted bars against movement, and a spring located between the pivoted bars, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a socket, lever-bars pivotally connected to the socket and provided with openings, said lever-bars extended above the top or upper endof thesocket, rock-bars provided with cranks, said cranks located through the openings in the leverbars, whip holding and gripping blades adapted to be actuated by the movement of the lever bars, substantially as specified.
t. In a device 01"? the character described, the combination of a socket, lever-bars pivotally connected to the socket and provided wit-h openings, said lever-bars extended above the top or upper end of the socket, rock-bars provided with cranks, said cranks located through the openings in the leverbars, whip holding and gripping blades adapted to be actuated by the movement of the lever-bars, and means for locking the lever-bars in fixed position, substantially as specified.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a socket, lever-bars pivotally connected to the socket and provided with openings, said lever-bars extended above the top or upper end of the socket, rock-bars provided with cranks, said cranks located through the openings in the lever bars, whip holding and gripping blades adapted to be actuated by the movement of the lever bars, means for locking the leverbars in fixed position, and a spring located between the lever-bars, specified. V
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
