Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 20, 1912.
Patented July 8,1913.
serial No. 721,356.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. CARL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold-Bracket Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to means for attaching scaffold brackets to walls and the object of the invention is to provide a very cheap and simple device which may be laid between the courses of brick in a brick wall and serve as a place of attachment for a scaffold bracket, said device being readily removable from the wall after the same is finished.
To this end the invention consists in the matters hereinafter more fully described and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accom panying drawing in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a wall with devices embodying the invention in operative position thereon; Fig. 2 a vcrtical section through the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the devices detached.
In constructing brick and similar walls, it is necessary to support scaffold brackets against the side of the wall at different heights and to provide such a support, as the wall l is laid up, fastenings 2 are laid in between the courses of brick, they being in the form of a closed loop and preferably made of a heavy wire or rod, the cross sectional diameter of which is substantially equal to the height of the mortar space between the courses. Each of these loops is elongated to extend transversely through the wall with each end projecting a short distance beyond the face of the wall to form eyes for the engagement therewith at the outer side of the wall, of a hook 3 on a scaffold bracket i of any desired form or construction. The inner projecting end of the loop forms an eye to receive a bar 5 adapted to lie flat against the inner face of the wall and prevent the loop from being pulled through the wall under the strain of a heavy weight on the bracket. These loops are preferably made tapering throughout their length and are laid in the wall with their small ends outward and no mortar within the loops, said ends forming the eyes to receive the bracket hooks, and thus when the wall is finished and it is desired to remove the loops, they will readily free themselves because of their taper and may be easily pulled out. After the loops are removed from the finished wall, the small opening left therein may be filled with mortar.
A very cheap fastening is thus provided which may be conveniently placed in and removed from the wall as it takes up. only the mortar space and the necessity for leaving out any of the bricks is obviated.
Obviously, the fasteners may be made from other material and may be in a different form from that shown without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not limit myself to the particular form or construction shown.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim i':-
l.. A device for the purpose described comprising a member in the form of an elongated continuous loop tapered throughout its length and adapted to be laid in a wall with its ends projecting beyond the faces of said wall and removable therefrom by an endwise movement in the direction of its largest end.
Q. The combination with a scaffold bracket, of a fastening member having the form of a continuous elongated loop formed tapering throughout its length toward one end and adapted to be laid in a wall with its ends projecting beyond the faces of said wall to form eyes, a hook on the bracket engaging the small end of the loop member, and means engaging the opposite end of said member to lie against the face of the wall.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. CARL.
