ADJUSTABLE BRACKET AND SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,045, dated January 19, 1904.
Application filed March 21, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANeELIUs ANsrAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brackets and Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for securing brackets or other devices of like nature or use to walls, partitions, closets, or the like for Supporting shelving whereon to store or exhibit material or objects, the brackets being so constructed that they do not form any obstruction in the way of continuous placing of articles on the shelves, as is the case where the brackets reach for a distance down the wall for their attachment with braces to their outer ends, also for books or pegs which support articles direct without the intervention "of shelving, the supports being formed to receive the brackets, hooks, or pegs in manner to avoid the use of screws or nails and applied or removed by a simple quarter-turn of the bracket, hook, or peg and with means within the vertical member for the attachment of the horizontal members at de sired vertical distances apart in a manner which does not permit of their accidental re moval, as they must be turned to an angle of ninety degrees for their attaching or removal.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like parts are designated by like characters of reference, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the wall member and an attached bracket, a part being in section. Fig. 2 is atop view of Fig. 1 with the wall member in section on line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the wall member, showing a bracket inserted therein. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing abracket, a hook, and a peg supported by the wall member.
The wall member 1 is of three-sided rectangular construction, having a front wall 2 and side walls 3 4, forming a channel 5, open at its Serial No. 148,857. (No model.)
back. It is designed to be placed vertically and held by screws 6 or other like means suitable to the nature of the wall or partition to which it is secured, and blocks 7 are inserted between sides 2 3 4 in channels 5, through which screws 6 pass. Wall'2 is pierced at close distances withapertures 8, which are in elliptical shape with the longer axis on the vertical line and the shorter axis on the horizontal line. The elliptical shape is not wholly essential, it only being necessary to form openings which are more extended vertically than horizontally. Bracket 9 is provided with a projection having a circular neck 10, slightly smaller in diameter than the short axis of elliptical aperture 8 to insure a close fit and beyond 10 an elliptical flange 11 of slightly less size than elliptical aperture 8, so it may freely pass therethrough when the bracket is placed upon its side or at an angle of ninety degrees from its working position. The bracket is then turned with its face side 12 up, as shown, and the long ends of the ellipse grasp the back of the wall 2at the short sides of the elliptical apertureand support the bracket against any accidental displacement, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the end 18 of the bracket abutting the outer face of wall 2. Hook 14: and peg 15'are provided with the same means for their security and support as described for the bracket.
I claim Adjustable brackets and supports comprising vertical members having a series of elliptical apertures, and horizontal members or brackets, having elliptical pro ections which are adapted to pass through the apertures of the supports and interlocked therewith, in substantially the manner set forth.
