Description

G. W. SMITH. REED ORGAN PIPE.
No. 106,628. Patented Aug. 23, 1870.
new fitting patent utjljline.
Letters- Patent No. 106,628, dated August 23, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN REED ORGAN-PIPES.
The Scheduld referred to in than Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SMALL, of Worcester, in the county of \Vorcestcr and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reed Organ-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Mv invention relates to organ-pipes, and consists in certain improvements on their ordinary construct-ion, whereby I soitcn the tone and adapt then to use in .parlor organs, melodcons, &o.
A is the pipe;
B, its enlargement;
E, the mouth; and
G, the reed.
The stem I use as a receptacle for the reed, and as a moans-oi securing it to the organ.
The reed end ofthe pipe is inclosei in the windchest, and placed as deeply and near to the month or orifice E otthe pipe as possible.
By this means I. obtain two important advantages:
First, I get the full force of the reed, with its fixed pitch of tone softened and increased in volume, and
also a peculiar quality of tone, which cannot be produced as well by any other form of pipe.
Second, by using so short a pipe I am enabled vto apply it to reed (or parlor) organs and melodeons, 85c whereas the pipes in use cannot be employed to advantage on account of the room they occupy.
For this reason, doubtless, pipes have not been gen-. erally used hitherto in such instruments.
I use the open or free reed of parlor-organs, where the wind, in passing through the reeds, vibrates through the slot of the reed-flame, producing. the tone.
My invention has the advantages indicated, and the pipe is peculiarly adapted to portable instruments, such as parlor-organs, melodeons, &c.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a clear understanding of my invention,
What Iclaim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The improvedorgan-pipe A, constructed of wood or metal, having the spherical chamber B at one end, with a mouth, E, at the side, and having the reed attached to one side of A, all substantially as specified.
