Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913.
Application filed February 26, 1912. Serial No. 879,815.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALMA META GOLDZIER, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and usetul Improvement in Combined Erasers and Brushes, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to an improvement in means for attaching an ordinary disk rubber eraser to a holder for the same.
My invention is especially applicable to combined erasers and brushes.
The object of my invention is to make the eraser readily removable from its holder when worn out, so that a new eraser can be applled or inserted in the holder.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the holder that the eraser can be removed and replaced with the greatest ease, the parts being so constructed. however, as to obviate any possibility of the eraser becoming accidentally displaced from the holder during the time the eraser is being used to erase marks. This last object of my invention relates especially to an improvement in combined erasers and brushes.
The combined eraser and brush which is made in accordance with my invention is so constructed that when it is used in the position in which marks are being erased there is no possibility of the eraser-becoming removed or detached, but so that the eraser '35 ,may be readily removed by a movement in another direction.
I have shown one form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a combined rubber and brush embodying my invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a side elevation of one of the projections used for holding the eraser in position; Fig. 3 illustrates an-. other side elevation of the sametaken in a position at rightangles to the view shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on line 4+4 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, the combined brush and eraser comprises a brush 1, the
bristles of which are held together by means of a band 2. The band 2 is carried between the endsof a pair of side plates 3 which have a rivet 4 passing through the same, and through the band 2. The other ends of the side plates 3 have a pair of oppositely disposed projections 5. Each of the projections 5 is beveled on opposite sides thereof to produce beveled surfaces 6 in planes runnmg transversely of the combined brush and eraser. The remainder of the projection is cylindrical in shape as the sides of the pro ections are formed by cylindrical surfaces which are opposite the 'sides of the'two side plates 3. The projections 5 are intended to fit within a circular opening 8 in a tubular rivet 9 which binds together two disks 10 between which the body of rubber maintained.
In the use of the combined brush and eraser, I
it is grasped while in a position transverse of the hand, with the rubber beinglocated between the thumb and forefinger. The marks which are to be erased are therefore operated upon while the combined eraser and brush is parallel to the sheet of paper. Any pressure in this direction will have absolutely'no influence in displacing the eraser from between the plates 3. Inasmuch as this is the most convenient and the normal man the holder by merely pulling the same out of the holder in a direction longitudinal of the combined eraser and brush. A pull in this direction will quickly release the rubber because of the presence of the beveled sur faces'G. A new rubber can now be inserted with the greatest degree of ease, by inserting the same in the holder in a direction longitudinal of the combined rubber and brush but opposite to the direction in which the worn-out rubber has'been moved while being detached.
A great saving in cost is effected by the use of the combined rubber and brush embodying my invention. It is well known that the brush will far outlast the rubber, and it has been customary, because of the fact that the two are ordinarily secured together permanently, to discard the brush with the rubber when the latter has been completely used up.' With my invention, on the contraryfa purchaser ofthe combined articlemay readily re-insert a disk rubber of the ordinary type when the rubber attached to the brush has become Worn. out.
Its
Notonly' is this the but the eraser may bereplaeed in moment and without any difiicuity whatever, tl'lereby obviating any loss 0f time. 5 WhiIB I have described my invention detail, it to be understood that litiiiiy changes may he made therein Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

1 In a device of the. character described, a combined brush and eraser, and means for detaehably holding the eraser in plaee, comprising one or more beveled projections, one side of the projection or projections being beveled in a plane tranwerse to the plane of 1.5 the eraser and another side being perpendicular to said plane.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
I ALMA META GOLDZIER.
