Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913.
Application filed December 6, 1906, Serial No. 346,625. Renewed December 5, 1910. Serial No. 595,732.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns E. BURNAP,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cork-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention is concerned with a novel clip adapted to be sprung about the neck of a bottle just below the enlargement, and which, when it is in place, enables me to quickly and firmly secure a cork in place by means of a filament, such as a string or wire, so that it cannot be forced out by any interior pressure that may arise from any cause, and which can be as readily released when it is desired to open the bottle, and which can be more readily used to secure the cork, or another one, as many times thereafter as may be desired.
To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in both the figures, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention applied to the neck of a bottle and securing the cork in place; and Fig. 2 is a view of the clip detached, and with the associated filament.
The clip a is preferably, as will be readily seen, constructed of wire having sufiicient elasticity so that it can be sprung about the neck 6 of a bottle, as shown in Fig. 1, just beneath the enlargement 0. Generally speaking, it consists of an annulus which is open at one side, the two ends terminating adjacent the opening, with the angles cl, and the ends 6 are preferably extended a distance beyond these angles, so that the cord f can be readily looped about them and a knot tied, if desired, to prevent its being disengaged therefrom. At the opposite side of the annulus, two very acute angles are formed, preferably by crossing the wire as shown, and the portion of the wire outside of the crossing is preferably bent into some suitable shape to form a means for holding it readily, such as the two loops gg.
The method of using my invention will be readily apparent. The clip is slipped in place about the neck of the bottle, and the filament f, which may be a strong cord or 5 a small wire, is looped once 0r twice about the angles d, and preferably knotted, as at h, to prevent its being disengaged when the bottle is again opened. The cork j is then forced into place and the filament passed over it, and the ends wrapped several times in the acute angles, which serve to wedge it in place, and the more the filament is wrapped about it, and the more the cork presses upward, the tighter the string is held, so that there is no possibility of its being accidentally disengaged. Of course, the free end of the string might be tied if desired, but it is entirely unnecessary, and when the cork is to be released all that is necessary is to take the free ends of the string and unwrap them until they are released from the acute angles, when the cork is free to be withdrawn. If the bottle is to be re-filled, the string and clip may be left in place until this is to be done, when the cork can again be secured, with still less labor than the first time.
While I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purposes, it will be understood that it is capable of some modifications, and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A clip for the purpose described, con sis-ting of an elastic rod bent into shape to form an annulus open at one side and having angles d on either side of the opening and ends 6 extending beyond said angles, and at the other side crossed to form acute angles, substantially as described, and provided with the loops 9 between the acute angles and outside of the annulus.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bottle having an enlargement at the neck, of a cork therefor, a clip consisting of an annulus open at one side and having angles at either side of the opening adapted to be sprung about the neck of the bottle beneath the enlargement, and provided at its other side with acute angles, and a securing filament adapted to be secured to said angles of the clip, sub-.
stantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a bottle having an enlargement in the neck thereof, of a cork therefor, a spring clip consisting of an elastic rod bent into shape to form an annulus open at one side and having angles at either side of the Opening, and at the other side crossed to form acute angles, and adapted to be sprung about the neck of the bottle beneath the enlargement, and a securing filament adapted to be secured to said angles, snbstan ially as described. r
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 'hancland affixed my seal this 6th day of December, A. "5D. 1906" CHARLES E. BURNAP. [L.S.]
