1 BARRE, VERMONT.
BUSH-CHISEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, EDWARD M. ToBIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Barre, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Bush-Chisel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
-This invention relates to improvements in chisels, and particularly to chisels of the bush type, and has for an object to provide an improved structure wherein a chisel or bush is held firmly in place but may be quickly applied and removed whenever desired.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a chisel having a beveled socket for receiving the blades of the chisel, and the combination of a seat and a wedge arranged to spread and clamp the lower ends of the blades for holding the same rigidly in position.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, a body portion is provided formed with a slot having beveled walls. In this slot is fitted a seat held in place by suitable pins, the seat being formed with a central groove and upstanding end flanges. Arranged also in the slot and resting on this seat are a plurality of blades having the lower ends bent apart slightly for forming a notch in which is forced a beveled wedge adapted to tightly press the blades against the beveled or inclined sides of the slot.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side view of an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 approximately on the line 22; Fig. 3 is an end view of the body portion shown in Fig. 1, the blades and associated parts being removed; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a seat forming a feature of theinvention; Fig. 5 is an edge view of the structure shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the blades removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a head from which extends the handle or pole 2. The head 1 and the pole 2 may be of any desired size for accommodating any desired number of blades 3. It will be observed that the head 1 is provided with a slot 4 having inclined walls 5 and 6, against which the beveled sides 7 and 8 of the blades 3 press when the Wedge 9 is forced into the notch 10. The bottoms of the blades 3 are adapted to rest upon the seat or gib 11. In order to assist in preventing any movement of the blades 3, the gib 11 is formed with upstanding flanges 12 and 13 Which positively prevent any slipping of the blades. The bottom of the gib is provided with an inclined or beveled slot 14 for accommodating the beveled portion 15 of the wedge 9. The upper edge or the edge opposite the beveled portion 14, is formed substantially V-shaped in order to properly fit in the notch 10 and bind the inner ends of the blades 3 against the walls 5 and 6. In order to positively prevent the gib 11 from shifting its position, pins 16 and 17 are mounted therein and caused to extend downward into apertures 18 and 19 formed in the head 1.
By the construction and arrangement of the wedge 9 and the associated parts, the blades may be quickly applied and removed Whenever desired. This is of advantage where it is desired to use the same head 1 and a plurality of different kinds of blades 3.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a chisel of the class described, a body portion formed with a slot therein, a seat arranged in said slot formed with upstanding end members and a pair of apertures, a pin arranged in each of said apertures projecting into said body portion for locking said seat against movement, a plurality of blades arranged in said slotand resting against said seat, said end members preventing said blades from moving out of said slot, and a clamping wedge for clamping said blades in position against the walls of said slot.
2. In a chisel of the class described, a body portion formed with a slot therein and an aperture merging into said slot, a seat arranged at the bottom of said slot formed with upstanding end members, an aperture and a beveled groove extending longitudinally of the said seat and through said upstanding end members, the slot in said body portion being formed beveled, a pin extending through the aperture in said seat and into the apertures in said body for locking said EDWARD M. TOBIN. Witnesses:

seat in place, a plurality of blades positioned in said slot, and having the ends resting against said seat, and a Wedge b'v eled longitudinally and transversely p0sitioned in said beveled groove for spreading said blades and pressing the same against the inclined side Walls of said slot.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five'cents each, by addressing the f Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
