APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 18, 1912.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PETERSEN, OF CORVALLIS, OREGON.
DETACHABLE SAFETY-LOCK FOR MILKCANS.
Looao'ae.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Corvallis, in the county of Benton, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Detachable Safety-Lock for Milk- Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in looks for milk can covers and has for an object to provide a lock of this character which will beof extremely simple construction and opera tion and which will securely lock the cover in position.
Another object is to provide a two part lock of this character detachably connected with the handle of the cover and constructed in such manner as to grip the edges of the cover and can at three difierent points and thereby securely lock the cover in position.
Another object is to generally improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and form the same in such manner that they may be readily secured to the cover handles or removed from the same.
WVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a top plan view, showing my improved lock employed for locking a cover of ordinary construction upon a milk can of conventional form, a portion of the can being broken away. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of the same with parts broken away.
Refer-ring more specifically t0 the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the upper portion of a milk can of conventional form with the cover 2 of ordinary construction employed for closing the mouth of the can and provided with the transverse handle 3 having its opposite ends secured to the interior of the cover in the usual manner.
Positioned through the vertical opening in the center of the handle is a threaded member 4 having the nut 5 upon its lower end and bearing against the under face of the handle while the upper portion of said member 4 is bent to form an eye 6 through Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 18, 1912.
Patented July 1, 1913. Serial No. 721,109.
which is positioned the locking bar 7 which has one end flattened and bent upon itself to form a gripping finger 8 for engagement around the overlapped edges of the can and cover, as will be clearly apparent. The opposite end of the locking bar 7 is threaded, as shown at 9 and extended through the central opening in the flat locking strip 10 and has the thumb nut 11 upon said threaded end and bearing against one piece of the locking strip 10 to secure said strip in position and force the same along the locking bar 7. The locking strip 10 is given a half twist or turn of spaced distances from its opposite ends, as shown at 12 to place the ends of said locking strip in a horizontal plane. The ends are then bent back upon themselves, as shown at 13 to form gripping fingers similar to the gripping finger 8 of the locking bar 7 and also adapted for en gagement around the outwardly directed and overlapped edges of the cover 2 and can 1.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that owing to the length of the locking strip 10, the finger ends 13 thereof will be caused to tightly grip the edges of the cover and can as the thumb nut 11 is tightened upon the locking bar 7. It will also be evident that this locking bar will be drawn through the eye 6 and toward the locking strip 10, as the thumb nut 11 is tightened against the locking strip 10, thereby causing the gripping finger 8 formed on the free end of the locking bar 7 to also grip the edges of the cover and can. It will further be evident that the parts may be securely fastened to the cover handle 3 and play of the locking bar 7 and locking strip 10 prevented, by tightening the nut 5 upon the flattened member 4:, therebydrawing down upon the locking bar 7. It will further be apparent that the safety lock may be readily applied or removed as desired and the locking bar 7 and locking strip 10 may be swung at any desired angles with respect to the cover handle 3. Further, if desired, the'locking bar 7 may be provided with a suitable opening in its threaded end, outwardly of the thumb nut 11 to receive the bolt or wire of any conventional form of seal after the cover has been securely locked in position, thereby preventing unauthorized parties from removing the cover without leaving evidence of the act.
lVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be evident Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim is:
1. A can cover locking means comprising alocking strip having its opposite ends bent for engagement over the edges of a can and cover, a locking bar engaged through the locking strip and having one end bent for engagement over the edges of the can and cover, means for drawing the locking bar and strip toward one another, and means for connecting the locking bar with the cover.
2-. A cover lock comprising the combination with a can and cover, of a locking strip having its end formed for engagement around the overlapped edges of the can and cover, a locking bar having one end formed for engagement around the overlapped edges of the can and cover, means for drawing the locking strip and locklng, bar toward one another, and connections between the lockingbar' and can cover. 7
3. A can cover lock comprising the combination with a can and' a cover having a handle, of a threaded member positioned through the handle and. having its upper end in the form of an eye, a locking strip having its end formed for engagement around t'heedges of the can and cover, said locking bar being engaged through the eye of the threaded member and through the central portion of the locking strip, the portion of the member engaged through the locking strip being threaded, a thumb nut engaged upon the threaded portion of the locking bar and bearing against the locking strip to draw said strip and bar toward one another, and means upon the threaded mem: ber engaged through the handle for drawing the same downwardly and thereby prevent ingplay of the locking bar and strip.
