To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J. LORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leedey, in the county of Dewey and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and'useful Combined Halter and lVeaner, of which the following-is a specification.

The present invention relates to a combined halter and weaner for colts, calves and the like, and aims primarily to provide a device of this character bearing certain improvements over the device disclosed in Patent No. 770,688, issued September 20, 1904:, of which I ventors.

This invention aims to provide a halter of novel construction in combination with a weaner attachment which may be removed whenever desired, or after the animal has been weaned.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a combined halter and Weaner of the character indicated which shall be extremely simple in construction as well as compact, substantial, 12111Cl durable, and which will be convenient, efiicient and practical in use, the present device being superior to that shown in the aforementioned patent.

The nose piece 13 has its ends 14 looped through the respective openings 11 of the cheek strips 6, and the chin strap 15 has its ends 16 looped through the respective openings 11 so that it will be seen that the openings 11 provided by the ears 10 form suitable means for attaching the ends of the nose piece and chin strap directly to the lower ends of the cheek strips 6. The nose piece and chin strap in thus being attached to the cheek strips are conveniently held in position, and the halter is made comp-ara tively rigid and much more convenient in use. This arrangement will also be much more simple than the manner of attaching the nose piece and chin strap of the halter shown in the aforementioned patent, and the present arrangement is superior to the patented device in several respects which are apparent.

The cheek strips 6 may be constructed of any suitable metal, whereas the nose piece, chin strap, throat latch and the like are constructed of leather or other flexible material, the various parts being designed and proportioned according to the circumstances.

The weaner attachment has been designated generally by the numeral 17, the same being constructed of a blank stamped from sheet metal, as illustrated in Fig. 4. This blank comprises essentially a strip 18 which is bent into arcuate form, and which has its ends 19 bent back outwardly and secured upon itself to provide end loops 20. The strip 18 has staggered spurs 21 along its edges, which are bent outwardly and which are preferably curved, so as to increase the area over which their pointed ends extend. The strip 18 being bent to arcuate form, and the prongs or spurs being bent outwardly, causes the strip 18 to be bent on oblique lines 23 connecting the opposite quirks between the prongs, inasmuch as the outwardly bent prongs tend to straighten the strip, thus providing for the rigidity of the weaner so that it is substantial and durable when in use. 7

The weaner attachment is engaged to the halter by inserting the loops 20 between the respective pairs of ears 10 and then passing cotter or locking pins 22 through the apertures 12 in the ears and through the loops 20. The strip 18 will thus surround the nose piece 13 and will be spaced slightly therefrom, so that the attachment will not contact with the animals nose. The halter when in use, may therefore have the attachment applied thereto without injurious eftects and the attachment, as will be apparent, weans the animal in a manner well known in the art. After the animal has been weaned, the attachment may be removed by disengaging the pins 22 from the cars 10 and the halter may then be employed in its ordinary capacity.

The advantages of the present halter and attachment will be apparent from the fore going taken in connection with the drawings, and it will be seen that the present device provides a desirable and satisfactory one for the purposes for which it is designed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 2- 1. A halter embodying 'metallic cheekstrips, each having a pair of opposed ears struck outwardly from its lower end portion forming an intermediate opening, and. a nose piece and a chin strap having their ends looped through the said openings in the cheek strips, in combination with a weaning attachment including an arcuate member surrounding the nose piece and having prongs along its length, the ends of the said member being detachably engaged between the respective pairs of ears.

A halter embodying metallic cheek strips, each having a pair ofopposed ears struck outwardly fromitslower ,end portion forming an intermediate opening, and a nose piece and a chin strap having their ends looped through the said openings in the cheek strips, in combination with a weaning attachment including a metallic strip bent into arcuate form and surrounding the nose piece, said strip having staggered prongs along its edges bent outwardly, the ends of the strip being bent back outwardly and secured upon itself to provide end loops fitting between the respective pairs of ears, and removable locking pins passing through the respective pairs of ears and loops. 7 7

8. A halter embodying cheek strips, having ears struck outwardly from their lower end portions forming openings, and a nose piece and a chin strap having their ends looped through the said openings in the cheek strips, in combination with a weaning attachment surrounding the nose piece and detachably engaged to the said ears.
