DOLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed Jelly 23, 1912;.- Serial No. 711,120.
To all whom 2' 15 may concern:
. Be it known that I, DAISY G. Brzowxnof Challis, in the county of Custer and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls; and I hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. V
This invention is an improvement in dolls, and has particular reference to means for movably attaching the head tothe shoulder piece or body, and is particularly designed for use in connection with dolls having kid or cloth bodies.
Heretofore heads for kid or cloth body dolls have been made integral with the shoulder piece, and were therefore rig-id when attached to the body. By my invention the head is movahly attached to the shoulder piece'and can be turned right or left, and also adjust-ed slightly forward or backward, making it much more natural in appearance and more pleasing to children on account of such adjustment.
The inventionmay also be used for attaching heads to ordinary papier-mach bodies such as commonly used with jointed dolls.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a' head attached to a shoulder piece in accordance with my invention and will explain the invention with reference thereto although I do not consider the in vention restricted to any particular form of head or shoulder piece, nor to the use of the invention solely in connection with head and shoulder pieces.
In said drawingsFigure 1 is a front view of a dolls head and shoulder piece such as'may be used in connection with kid or cloth bodies. Fig.2 is a vertical section therethrough. Fig- 3 is a vertical section through Fig; 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the shoulder piece. Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof.
In said drawings A designates a doll head, and B a shoulder piece. The head may be of the usual construction, and provided with a neck a having a rounded end a which is seated in a concavity b in the top of the shoulder piece B. Below the concavity 1) in the under side of the shoulder piece I preferably form a concavity b in which is lowsely fitted the globular or partly globular head 0 of a rod C which extends up wardly through the shoulder piece and into the'head through an opening aiin the lower end of the head; the upper end of rod C is fastened to the head," preferably near the upper end thereof, by means of a wire or cord D.w'hich may be passed throughan opening in the upper end of the rod and through openings a in the sides of the head as shown. In this manner-the head A is neatly but adjustably attached to the shoulder piece B by a substantially universaljoint connection and such connection permits the head to be turned to the right or backward as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3; and to enable this to be done more readily I preferably make the opening a in the lower end of the head larger in diameter than the rod C so that the head can be tilted farther than the rod itself in any direction. This connection is very simple; can be very 'left as indicated in dottedlines in Fig. 2; I and it can also be tilted slightly forward or easily applied; and does not require any I special tools.
Instead of a Wire D a resilient cord may be used which Will compensate for'any play between the head and shoulder piece and prevent binding therebetween in the 'ordinary adjustments-of the head.
If desired a pin, as E, may be attached to the ball 0, or the lower end of the rod C to limit the turning of the head to right or left, by striking against the front'o'r' rear walls of the shoulder piece. The position of this;
pin may be varied within the scope of the invention, and I do not consider my inven tion limited to its use in all cases What I claim is:
1. In combination, a body or shoulder piece, and a dolls head; a member inserted through the shoulder piece and. extending into the head, and having a substantially universal-joint connection between its lower end and the shoulder piece, and'a loose con nection between the upper end of the memher and the head.
. 2. In combination, a dollsbody 0r shoulder piece having an opening in its top and a concavity at the upper end of said opening; a dolls head having a rounded neck adapted to rest in the said concavity, a rod having its lower end loosely confined to the body and extending upwardly therethrough into the head, and a resilient connection between the upper end of said rodand the head.
3. In combination, a dolls body or shoul-. der piece having ahopening in its top and piece into the head and-forming a-substan- -t-ia11y universal'joint connection between the? rod and body, and means above the my 15 connecting the rod and the head. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 1
concavi'iies at the upper and lower ends of id op ning, a dolis head having a rounded neck adapted to rest in the upper concavity of the body a rod having its lower end ioosely confined in the lower concavity of the body or shoulder piece and extending upwardly :iverethrough into the head, and a connection between the upper end of said rod and the head. a
4. In combination, a body piece and a head piece, a rod having an enlargement on its lower end inserted through the body DAISY G. BROWN.
