To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, l/VARREN G. KELLoW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more particularly to dolls of the stuffed type provided with composition heads, arms and legs.

Formerly it has been the bractice to attach composition heads having shoulder pieces formed integrally therewith to dolls whose bodies are formed of cloth or kid, the shoulder piece being sewn or otherwise attached to the body f the cloth doll at the top thereof. When the head was accidentally broken a new doll would have to be purchased. In dolls formed of bisque, or other compositions, the heads have been formed separate from the body and are pivotally attached thereto, thus rendering it easy to replace a broken head, such heads being sold separately.

By forming a socketed shoulder piece for stuffed dolls separate from the head portion and pivotally attaching the heads thereto, an owner of a doll may readily replace a broken dolls head, and further, by reason of its pivotal attachment to the shoulder piece the head may be turned and adjusted as in more expensive constructions.

It is an object of my invention to provide a socketed shoulder piece for dolls whose bodies are formed of cloth or kid, whereby composition heads may be pivotally at tached thereto.

I accomplish the above objects by means of the device herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is an elevation of my doll construction, parts being in section to more fully disclose the pivoting means.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my socketed shoulder piece for dolls.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, 5 designates a dolls shoulder piece preferably formed from a plastic material, or bisque, comprising a top portion 6 of considerable thickness, relatively thin front and rear ttaching portions or flanges 7 and 8. Each of said flanges 7 and 8 are pro vided near their lower edges with apertures 9 for attaching the shoulder piece to the doll body in any suitable manner. The top portion 6 is provided with a cup shaped re cess 10 forming a socket for the head piece which is attached thereto as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The doll head 11 is of the usual hollow construction, and is provided with a neck portion 12, the end being rounded as at 13 so as to fit within the cup shaped recess formed in the top portion 6, and also to permit of a turning or tilting movement when attached thereto.

In the bottom of recess 10 is formed an aperture 14: through which passes the lower end of a coiled spring 1.5, the end of said spring engaging a flat apertured washer 16 which bears against the under surface of the top portion of the shoulder piece 6. The upper end of spring 15 is pivotally secured to an eye 17 formed on one end of a resilient hooked member 18, the free end 19 of said member terminating adjacent the eye 17 of the hook. The round end 13 of neck portion 12 is provided with an opening 20 through which the hooked member passes when the head 11 is secured to the shoulder piece, the hook being squeezed together when passing it through the opening 20 in. the neck portion. As the free end 19 of the hooked member 18 engages with the inner surface of the neck portion around the opening therein it will be impossible to disengage the head from the shoulder piece, except by means of an instrument or through the opening 21 in the top of the head.

From the above description it will be apparent that the head piece may be adjustably secured to the shoulder piece of a doll by a universal coupling, and that the head can be turned or tilted at various angles, the tension of the coiled spring retaining the head in any desired adjusted position.

It will also be observed that I have produced an inexpensive shoulder piece that will be readily secured to the body of a stuffed .doll, and which will permit of a quick repair to a doll should its head become accidentally broken.

What I claim is:

1. In a doll construction, a composition shoulder piece adapted to be secured to the body of a stuffed doll having a recess formed in the top thereof, and being further provided with an aperture in the bottom of said recess, a composition head piece having an openlng 1n the head portlon adapted to seat in the recess formed 1n the shoulder piece, and a resilient connection detachably secured to said shoulder piece and engaging said head piece, whereby a turning or tilting movement of the head is provided for.

2. In a doll construction a composition shoulder piece adapted to be secured to the 10 body of a stuffed doll having a cup shaped recess formed at the top thereof, and being further provided with an aperture in the the head piece in a svviveled relation to each other.
