BOTTLE-CAPPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J 1111624, 1913.
Application filed November 16, 1910. Serial No. 592,716.
Bottle-Capping Devices, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for applying caps or crowns to bottles.
The object of my invention is the production of a device of the character mentioned by means of which bottles may be readily and expeditiously capped or crowned and without the need of employment of skilled labor.
A further object is the provision of a bottle capping device which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a'bottle capping device embodying my invention, a portion of the operating lever being broken off and shownin section, Fig. 2 is a sec tional side elevation of the device arranged for applying a cap to a bottle, a bottle be ing shown in dotted lines, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the base and bottle supporting blocks of the device.
The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawing comprises a flat, preferably metallic base 1 substantially circular in outline. Rising from said base is a standard 2, the lower end of the latter being rigidly secured to said base by means of screws 3 and nuts 4. The upper end of the standard 2 is bifurcated as at 5 for the reception of the inner ends of a lever 6 and a link 7 which are pivotally secured thereto by means of pivotal pins 8. The lever 6,'as will be observed, is of considerable length, the outer extremity thereof terminating in a handle or grip 9. Said lever 6 and link 7 are arranged in parallelism, the same being pivotally secured as at 10 with the bifurcated upper end portion of a cap applying plunger 11; the arrangement being such, as will be observed, that irrespective of the angular positions of said lever and link, said plunger will always be carried in a vertical posit-ion. The lower end portion 12 of the plunger 11 is enlarged as noted, the same being provided with a circular recess 13 which is open at its lower end. The lower end portion of the recess 13 is of a diameter slightly greater than that of the upper end portion thereof, resulting in the formation of an annular shoulder 14 which is preferably round as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Arranged within the upper end portion of the recess 13 is a' helical 'compressionspring 15 the upper end of said spring being secured to the head 12 of the plunger, the lower extremity thereof being free. Arranged upon the lower edge of the head 12 is a concentric resilient, preferably rubber ring or retainer 16, the latter being secured in position by means of a metallic ring or flange 17 secured to said head 12 by means of screws 18. The opening in the retainer 16 is of a diameter slightly less than that of the lower end portion of recess 13, the opening in the ring 17 being of a diameter coincident .with that of said end of said recess 13.
Arranged upon'the base 1 directly below the plunger 11 is a block 19 upon which may be arranged the bottle to be operated upon. A rubber mat or cushion 20 is prefthe block 19 in proper position upon the base 1, the former is provided With a central reduced extension 21 which engages an open ing 22 provided for the reception thereof in said base. In order that the device will be adapted to accommodate bottles of various heights an additional section23 may be arranged upon the block 19, such section being held central or coaxial upon the block 19 by means of a depending reduced extension 24 which engages a recess 25 provided for the reception' thereof in the upper side of said block 19.
The operation of the device is as follows: A ca or crown in .uncrimped'condition is first pushed upward through the ring 17, retainer 16 and the lower end of the recess 13,
being, of l s 1d vnicb the openi uuwcinent of the plunge will carry. the cap or crown directly over the mouth of the bottle, cmitinued depression of said lever effectinn; thh
the
the bending or crimping;- oi the edges Of cap firmly about the bead provided at mouth of the bottle, this crimping or in;- being effected by contact of the peai o of the cap with the shoulder i iin the manner as will be readily understood. After this operation the operating lever will again be raised out oi: engagement with the cap which Wlli remain in position upon the mouth er the bottle. The spring vrh is arranged in. the upper end of the of the plunger serves to hold the a, must the neck of the bottle before ping; operation to insure the correct positiol' of said cap before the same is erin'iped upon o: chcd to the bottle.
it apparent with a device of the con struction as set forth that caps may be readily and quickly applied to bottles with out the i eed of exercising a great deal of cure or ill. The device is of simple and econoin al construction and hence may be inanuractur-ed at a lou cost; and the same is not susceptible to readily becoming inoperative,
While l have illustrated and described the noeaess base, a standard, a cappingplunger mounted on said standard and above said base, a supporting block for the bottle to be capped, a depending central portion on said block, there being an aperture in said base to reccive the same, and an annular cushion between said block and said base and surrounding said depending, portion, substantially as described. l
Q. In a bottle cappin machine, a base, a standard, a capping plunger mounted on said standard above said base,/said base having an aperture, a supporting block provided with a depending portion adapte'd to engage in said aperture and rovided with a recess in its upper end siml iar to the aperture in the base, and a supplemental block, said supplemental block being provided with a depending lug adapted to engage in said recess, substantially as described.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
