dirt or the like, that is rain proof, and-that is'so disposed that the contents of the wagon body is at all times -accessible, there being no supporting member between the ends of the top when the latter is-fully opened on one side.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a wagon box equipped with a top that embodies features of the inventlon; Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section of the box and top; Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof; and Fig. 4 is a view in section and in detail of a joint between two sections.
Referring to the drawings, a wagon box 1 preferably with drivers set 2, has a front board 3 back of the seat and an end board f all of conventional construction. A-pair of segmental or semi-circular end plates 5 are provided with dowel pins 6 adapted to enter sockets in the front and end boards of the box. A hasp 7 or other convenient means is used for securing each segment in place. The end plates are connected by a longitudinally disposed top member 8 which, if preferred, may be stiflened by an uprlght plate 9, the latter affording a convenient place for application of advertising matter. Each end plate 5 has a bearing pin 10 at its center of curvature on which segmental frames 11 and 12 are swiveled, the frames each carrying curved cover boards 13 and 14 respectively. The frames and cover boards are so disposed that when turned intoclosed position their, inner marginal portions overlap beneath the member 8, and
each whenturned uncover one side of the box and when turned down rest on the upper edge of the side 15 of the box. At their outer margins the cover boards 13 and 14 underlie a flange strip 16 secured on the end lates 5, which insures a tight joint. In

order'to allow access to one portion of the box without uncovering the other portion the cover-boards are divided transversely or made in sections, those on the end frames, 11 having arabbet joint or tongue-and-groove construction indicated in Fig. 4,'in which the marginal ortion 17 of orfe board lies between end anges 18 of-the companion board. Similar arrangement is made for "the meeting edges of, the two sections car- 'ried by the 'frames 12. As a convenient form of construction and for the sake of 'sy-mmetr and appearance the outer one of the-mem ers 18is continued around the side and: other end margins of the member 14 to give it a panel effect while a similar effect is obtained by facing strips 20. Handles19 orother convenient means are provided for raising and lowering the sections. As a result of this construction a sanitary cover is provided which may be bodily removed from a wagon box and which when applied thereto, afl'ords protection from dust and water and gives easy access to articles in any portion of the box without uncovering the whole of the box. Either side of the box 'may be uncovered throughout the entire length, and as there is no middle support, articles as long as ,the box will contain may be readily loaded on or removed from the vehicle to which the top is applied.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is p 1. The combination with a wagon box having front and end boards of a top therefor consisting of a pair of segmental end plates adapted to rest on the front and end boards of the box, means detachably securing the plates in position, a top member connecting the upper portion of the end plates, and a pair of curved cover boards pivotally secured to the end plates to swing past eac other, the upper margins of the cover boards overlapping and the lower margins contacting with the box sidewhen the top is closed,
each cover board bein transversely divided between its ends to orm sections and the adjacent margins ofsuch sections having interlocking sliding engagement with each other whereby any one section may be raised without disturbing the other sections.
2. A wagon having a front board and an frames journaled on each bearin end board and a top therefor consisting of a air of segmental end plates, guldes for ho ding the end plates in alinement on the front and end boards respectively, means deried at the outer ends by the oppositely disosed members of each pair of quadrant rames, and interlocked in sliding engagement at the inner, meeting margins, the sections when in closed position spanning the wagon box between the sides and end plates.
3. The combination of a wagon box having front and end boards therein, of a topconsisting of a pair of end plates resting respectively on the front and end boards, means detachably securing the plates in po-.
sition, a top member secured to the upper ortions of the end plates, an inwardly proectin flange on the curved margin of each end p ate, quadrant frames each pivoted at substantially the center of curvature of an end. late, a pair of curved cover boards divide transversely into sections, the outer end portions of which underlie the end plate flanges and are supported by the quadrant frames, and the inner end portions of which are in interlocked sliding engagement, the
cover boards bein adapted to inclose the box between ,the sides and end plates when the outer lateral margins of the several sections are in contact with the box sides, and
each section of the top being movable inde- CHARLES W. CARTER.
