.WILLIAM B.- BURT'NEKTT, 4.OF NEW YORK, N.
Letters Patent N .7106,545. dated August 23, 1870.
IMPROVEMENTIN FERRULES FOR PAINTf-BR''SHES.'
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mafy concern Be it known that I, WILLLAM B. BUMNETL'of the city, county, and State of' New York, have in vented a' new and useful Improvement in Ferrules for Paint-Brushes; and I do hereby decla-re that the fbllowing is a full, clear, and'exact description thereof',
which will enable others skilled in the art to make,
Y fel-rule.
`Similar letters of refe-rence indicate corresponding` parts. i
A represents the cylindrical part;
B, the end or top; and
C, the small flange projecting from the wall of the central hole'f'or the handle.
The pawl A is first made cylindrical, and then oontraoted at the open end by means of' dies or other suitable means, so that the bristles, which are largest atthe butt ends, will be wedged in when -the handle vis driven in and held more securely against drawing out.
' 'lo make these'ferrnles, I take a circular disk of meta-l and strike it up in dies into theform`ot` a cup with a plane bottom. I then Vsubject it to the action of a pair ot' dies having a semi-spherical cavity in the center of thevv bottom-of theferrule die, anda corresponding projection o n' the end of the maleidie, and
thereby raisean o'val projectionV on the upper side of the part B; thenI subject the blank toa pair of' dies` suitably shaped to cut the said projection at the end of the tiange C, and to'swell the part forming the said flange into the finished shape shown.
In this way I am enabled to produce'the said ange around the holewithout tearing or checking the metal, which occurs in attempting lto form the holevand the flange at the same time the cup is formed, or in attempting to raise the said projection and cut it off at one operation.
Cast-metal fel-rules made in thesame form as mine with the exception ofthe contractiouat the open end,
have been heretofore used, buttheyare so liable to break (oren when malleablized) when the handles are driven in, that they are very unsatisfactory, and a great percentage of waste arises from the frequent break-f ages. At best the bristles are not as wellsecured as they should be. y l
Now, my improved fer-rules are so strong that it is impossible to break them with the handles ordinarily used in wedgiug them, as I have'demonstrated practically, the said handles splitting and breaking instead Having thus described my invention,
-I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sheet-metal paint-brush ferrulc, formed of one piece of sheet metal, as .herein described, as an improved article ot' manufacture. Y
The above sp'ecication of' my invention signed by me this 3d day of June, 1870. Y v
