METALLIC BOX.
Speeificationof Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed May 2, 1912. Serial No. 694,614.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH '13. ST. Hnnnns, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Rochester, in the county of' Monroe and State of New York, have vented a new and Improved Metallic Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic b xes and is a continuation in part of applicants application, serially numbered 542,524, filed:
February 7, 1910.
The object is to provide a metallic box,
and a blank therefor, that may be shipped and stored with the blank from which the box is formed in its flattened out condition and from which the box may be readily formed by bending up the blank, to form the sides and ends of the box, along suitably creased lines. The side and end members of the box have interlocking flaps:
adapted to be readily folded to locking position to rigidly hold and secure the sides and ends of the completely formed 'boX in' their normal positions without the aid of solder or rivets or any fastening means other than such as is formed by the inter-. engaging and inter-locking sides and end;
members themselves.
The accompanying drawings illustrating a box In accordance with my invention are as follows: 7
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the body of the box is made. Fig. 2
is a plan view of the blank from which the cover is made. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are plan, side and end views respectively of the body of the box completely formed. Fig. 6 is a side view and Fig. 7 an end view of the cover completely formed. Fig. 8 is an enlarged transverse sectional View of the box taken along the line m-y of Fig. 4, but with the cover thereon, while Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional view of a partof the box taken along the line c -g of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, similar parts are designated by similar letters of refer-. ence throughout the several ffigures of the drawings.
The body of a'box in accordance with my invention is formed from a blank, such as seen in plan view in Fig. 1, having-a bottom member B bounded on each of its four sides with a crease, as indicated at o, and
.on the outer sides of the longer creasesare seen side members A, each having a finer crease extending longitudinally thereof in.-
dicated at the dotted lines 1 and 4 and also having at each end thereof a similar and transversely extending crease, indicated at the dotted lines 6 and 7. Beyond the finer creases l and 4 are seen portions a adapted, when bent down as indicated in Figs. 13, 4, 5, .8 and 9, to form cover engaging and holding flaps or extensions. At the endsof each of these side members A there are seen j triangularly shaped flaps F adapted to be bent up at right angles with the sides A. These locking flaps F have locking ears f thereon. Along the line of the finer creases l and 4 in the sides A are seen slits s adapted to receive the locking flaps Z later to be described. The ends of the box E have fine creases therein, as indicated at the dotted lines 5 and -S, beyond which are seen the flaps 0 while along the line of the creases 5 and 8 are formed slits u adapted to receive the looking ears f. At the lends voit each of the end members E, and beyond the fine creases indicated .by dotted lines 2 and 3, are seen locking flaps D each carrying a locking ear cl adapted to engage through the slits s in the sidemembers A.
In forming a box from such a blank the members A and E are bent up .to form the sides and ends of the box with the flaps, carried by one of such pair of opposite mem- ,bers, engaging within the inside of the box and with the flaps,,carried by .the.other pair of such oppositely disposed members, engaging outside of the boX,iIl the drawings I have shown the flaps D as engaging outside of the sides A and the fiapsF as engaging inside of the ends E. Before bending up the sides andends, as just above described, it is preferable to bend the locking ears fontwardly and away from the observer, with reference to Fig. 1 along the dotted lines indicated where they unite with the flaps F while the ears (Z on the flaps D,are similarly bent toward the observer. As the box is formed from the blank the ears f are inserted so as to extend outwardly through the slits a while the ears cl are insertedso as to extend inwardly through the slits s,- after outside of the box in such a way as to be spaced from the sides A to comprise engaging and holdin means for the slidable cover.
The cover is formed from a blank, such as seen in plan view in Fig. 2 and comprises the main central portion C, bounded by suitable crease lines o and having side flaps 0 adapted to be folded inwardly along the fine crease lines, indicated at the dotted lines 9 and 10, and within but spaced from the flaps o, as clearly indicated in Fig. 8, so as to receive the cover holding flaps a between the parts 0 and 0 The cover is provided with end flaps P adapted to be folded down along the heavy creases v to form the ends of the cover and each of these end flaps l"? in turn is provided with an extension member 72 adapted to be formed around a suitable rod or core 0*, as indicated in Fig. 6, and one of the end flaps as indicated in this figure may be folded downwardly to final position while the other one, as seen at the left in Fig. 6, may remain in its straightened out position until after being inserted over the box after which, when desired, it may be bent down in the same way as the one seen at the right hand end of the cover in Fig. 6. To facilitate the locating of the core or rod r and the forming of the roll around the same the flaps 1 may have fine creases formed therein as indicated at the dotted lines 11 and 12.
From the foregoing description of my box and the blank from which the same is formed it is believed that the coiiperation of the several parts thereof is sufficiently clear to call for no further explanation herein.
