(moan W1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. RIGGS, OF BONNIEVILLE, KENTUCKY.
LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES VJ. Rises, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonnieville, in the county of Hart and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to door latches. Y
In carrying out my invention I propose to provide a door having an upper and a lower pivoted hook member arranged upon one of its faces, the said hook members adapted to co-act with the keeper members arranged upon the door casing, the hook members being provided with connecting rods, one of said rods passing through an opening in the door and being provided with a hasp which is adapted to co-act with a staple arranged upon the second face of the door, whereby the hooks may be locked by a lock applied to the staple after the hasp has been arranged upon the staple or whereby when the lock is removed, the hook members may be operated from either side of the door.
lVith the above recited objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the novel construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following description, and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement in applied position upon a door, the door being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an elevation looking toward the opposite face of the door.
Referring now to the drawing, in detail, the numeral 1 designates the door, which in the present instance is provided at a suit able point with a vertically arranged elongated slot 2. Secured upon one of the faces of the door 1, and adjacent the top and bottom thereof, are suitable brackets 3, each of the said brackets having pivotally con nected therewith hook members 4 and 5 respectively. The door casing, or wall of the room adjacent the said door is provided with keeper lugs 6 and 7, the said lugs being arranged in the path of the engaging lips of the hooks, and adapted to coact there with as will be presently understood.
Pivotally connected with each of the hooks 4 and 5 are the oppositely extending Specification of Letters Patent.

rods 8 and 9. The rod 8 has its upper extremity offset or arranged at an angle as designated by the numeral 10. This angular portion 10 is extended through the opening 2, and the extremity of the said portion is preferably formed with an eye 11, where by a hasp 18, is loosely connected thereto. The hasp 13 is adapted to co-act with a staple 12, which is arranged upon the face of the door opposite to that provided with the rods 8 and 9. The hasp is adapted to receive a suitable lock 14.
The numeral 15 designates a clamp which is rigidly secured to the rod 8 and which is provided with a suitable opening through which the rod 9 passes. The rod 9 is sustained in a proper position upon the clamp through the medium of a threaded member 16 which passes through a threaded opening in the clamp and which contacts with the portion of the rod that is arranged within the opening of the clamp.
The numeral 17 designates a suitable eye which is disposed below that portion of the clamp 15 secured to the rod 8, the said eye adapted to serve as a stop for limiting the movement of the rods 8 and 9.
By providing the hasp 13 with the staple 12 and the lock 14 therefor, it will be readily noted that the door cannot be opened from either of its sides until the lock 14 is removed, and further that as long as the staple engages with the hasp the hook members 4 and 5 will be effectively retained upon the lugs or lips 6 and 7 respectively. While the keeper lugs 6 and 7 are illustrated as positioned upon a side of the door frame, it is to be understood that the said members may be arranged one upon the top member of the frame, and one upon the sill for the door, in which instance the hook members 4 and 5 would be supported nearer the top and bottom of the door. Again, when the device is employed upon double doors, either sliding or hinged keepers may be arranged upon one of the said doors, while the locking mem here are arranged upon the co-acting door. The brackets 3, in this instance would of course have their extending car so arranged as to sustain the hook members longitudinally of one of the doors.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a locking device for doors, the combination with a door having an elongated opening, brackets upon one of the faces of the door, hooks pivotally connected with the brackets, keeper lugs arranged cooperatively with the hooks, rods pivotally connected with the hooks, one of said rods having an angular portion extending through the door opening, a clamp member secured to the said rod, adjustable means for securing the second rod to the clamp member, a stop member connected with the door and adapted to cooperate with the clamp, a hasp secured to the angular arm of the rod which extends through the opening of the door, and a staple for the hasp, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A locking device for doors comprising and pivotally connected with the rods, and
k eper lugs upon the door casing adapted to co-act with the hooks.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
