coLummA PLANOGRAPH co., WASHINGTON. u. c.
TIMOTHY 13. HORNUNG, OF SACRAIVIENTO, CALIFORNIA.
OUTLET-GATE.
Application filed December 26, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, TIMOTHY F. HOR sure, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramen'to and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlet-Gates, of which the follow ing is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to an improved water outlet gate, adapted for use where measured quantities of water are desired, hut is more particularly designed to be employed in connection with the outlet laterals of irrigation systems where measured quantities of irrigation water are sold to the consumers, and has for its principal object to provide a gate capable of being adjusted to admit of a flow therethrough of the maximum quantity of water per hour or day as is purchased by the coi'isumer.
A further object is to provide means whereby said gate is locked from being opened by the consumer to a distance which will admita greater quantity of water to flow therethrough than is purchased by the consumer.
Another and important object is to provide a gate capable of being adjusted from I a closed position .to the maximum opening controlled by the locking mechanism, so that the quantity of water issuing from the opening can be readily regulated, but the opening in the face plate is prevented from being enlarged to accommodate a greater outflow of water than is paid for by the consumer.
Vith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from he spirit or sacrificing any advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompany ing sheet of drawings in which like letters of reference designate similar part, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved outlet gate mounted at the discharge Specification. of Letters Patent.

end of an irrigation lateral, disclosing the plate carryin the same, the opening there in, the slide gate for regulating the width of said opening, the means for locking the slide in its adjusted position and the auxiliary cut-off slide for controlling the regulated opening. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, disclosing the face plate, the guide plate secured to the face thereof, the slidefgate and the auxiliary cut-off slides positioned in the guide, and the lo .:king means for said slide gate. F 3 is .a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, disclosing the face plate, the guide plate, the openings therein, and the auxiliary cut-off, and a por- 'tion of the main slide gate.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 1. designates a suitable supporting or face plate provided with an opening 2 extending longitudinally thereof and said plate is adapted to be socured, in any suitable manner, over the outlet opening or lateral 2 of an irrigation ditch or other source of water supply. A guide plate 3 is secured to one face of the plate 1 by the units l or other suitable means, and said plate is provided with an opening .5, which registers with the open ing 2 in plate 1. A guide '6 extends the full length of the plate 3 from one edge of the opening 5 and also extends abo-veand below said opening in the form of L-shaped trackways 7, which are imited at their outer ends by a plate 8 which extends outwardly from the opposite side edge of the opening 5, and provides one end of an outlet chute or trough, the bottom edge of which is formed by the outwardly projecting lip 9 which ex tends the full width of the lower edge of said opening 5. A suitable channel or slot 10 is forr ed for the full length of the plate 3 at right angles to the guide 6, the inner edge thereof communicating with said guide for its full length, and said plate is provided adjacent said slot with spaced openings 10".
A slide gate 11, formed with a longitudinally extending outwardly projectingtongue or rib 12 is slidably mounted in the guide 6, with the tongue thereof projecting in the slot 10 and said tongue is locked in adjusted position by a suitable headed bolt 18 which is inserted through the openings 10 in the plate 3 and through corresponding openings 15 in the tongue 12. A slot or opening 16 is regulate the required flow of water purchased by the consumer.
It will be observed that by adjusting the slide gate 11 in the guide and locking the same in position, that any required width may be given to the opening through which the water passes, and that the consumer or a person paying for a stipulated amount of water per day or hour, will be prevented. from increasing the size of the opening to permit a greater quantity of water to flow therethrough.
Slidably mounted in the guide 6 in rear of the slide gate 11 is an auxiliary cut-off 18, provided at its forward end with a rectai'igularly bent portion 19 which slides over the lip 9 and forms the opposite end of the water outlet chute. It will be observed that the auxiliary cutoff 18 may be operated to regulate the size of the opening afforded by the slide gate 11., and if necessary close said opening entirely, the operation of the auxiliary cut-off 18 being under control of the party purchasing the water, to reduce the flow thereof from the outlet chute if for any reason it becomes necessary. The outward sliding of the auxiliary cut-off 18 is limited by the portion or arm 19 thereof contacting with the end of the slide gate 11.
By the employment of my improved gate the consumers will be enabled to regulate 01' entirely shut off the flow of water purchased, but will be prevented from opening the gate to such a distance as to admit a greater quantity of water to flow therethrough than that purchased.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. The combination with an irrigation outlet lateral, of a guide secured over the discharge end thereof, a slide gate slidably mounted in said guide and adapted for controlling the volume of water issuing from said lateral, locked means associated with said slide gate for locking the same in a predetermined open position, and an auxiliary cut-off gate for controlling the opening afforded by said slide gate.
2. The combination with an irrigation outlet lateral, of a guide secured over the discharge end thereof, a slide gate slidably mounted in said guide and adapted for controlling the volume of water issuing from said lateral, locked means associated with said slide gate for locking the same in a predetermined open position, and an auxiliary cut-off gate slidably mounted in said guide for controlling the opening afforded by said slide gate.
3. The combination with an irrigation outlet lateral, of a guide secured over the discharge end thereof, a slide gate slidably mounted in said guide and adapted for controlling the volume of water issuing from said lateral, lock controlled means asso ciated with said slide gate and said guide for locking said gate in a predetermined open position, and an auxiliary cut-off gate slidably mounted in said guide and positioned adjacent said slide gate for controlling the opening afforded by said slide gate.
1. The combination with an irrigation outlet lateral, of a face plate secured over the discharge end thereof and provided with a suitable outlet opening therein, a guide secured thereto and extending above and below said opening, a slide gate slidably mounted in said guide and adapted for controlling the volume of water issuing from said lateral, lock controlled means associated with said slide gate and said guide for 4 locking said slide gate in a predetermined open position, and an auxiliary cut-off gate slidably mounted in said guide and positioned adjacent said slide gate for cont-rolling the opening afii'orded by said slide gate,
5. The combination with an irrigation outlet lateral, of a face plate secured over the discharge end thereof and provided with an outlet opening therein, a guide plate secured to said face plate adjacent said opening and formed with a guide therein, portions of which extend above and below said opening, an outwardly projecting flange ex tending from one side edge of the opening in said plate, an outwardly projecting flange extending from the lower edge of the opening in said plate, a slide gate slidably mounted in said guide and adapted for controlling the volume of water issuing from said lateral, lock controlled means associated with said slide gate and said guide plate for locking said slide gate in a predetermined open position, an auxiliary cutoff slidably mounted in said guide adjacent said slide gate for controlling the opening afforded by said slide gate, and an outwardly projecting flange extending from the forward end of said auxiliary cut-oft, the three mentioned outwardly projecting flanges cooperating to form an outlet trough for said opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
TIMOTHY F. HORNUNG.
