Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J1] ll 1 '7, 1 9 l 3.
Application filed February 11, 1911.- Serial No. 601,975.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVsUrnn A. HALL, a
' citizen. of the-United States, 'residin at My invention relates-b hangers, and the object of my invention is to provide a hanger or suspending device which may.
' be used to quickly attach the device to be suspended to'rthe supporting'nieans.
In thedrawings, which form a part/of this specification, similar reference characters refer tothe sanie parts. i
Figure ljis 1e evat-ionof my suspending devic partly in sectio Fig. 8. 'side view to be suspended? is' a rear elevation of the case in Fig. 2 showing more clearly the lugs of the'case. Fig. 4 IS an elevation partly in section of a art of my suspending device showing anoter means of attach= ing -the upper part of a. suspending device to'the suspended case.
My invention, is deslgned particularly to be used in suspending transformer cases from, cross arms on poles but obviously its use 18 not so limited, but it may be used to suspend any device wherever it may be desired. 7
My hanger 1 is designed to be made in a general U-shapc somewhat narrower-near the bottom, as shown at; 2, than at the top. In order to attach this hanger to the supporting means, as a cross arm, some cngag ing means must. of course be used attached to thercar of the hanger. I prefer to employ hooks 3 at the top of the hanger as shown. These hooks are of a size and shape adapted to engage over a common crossarm. a
Somewhere near the middle of the device, it is preferable that provision be made for attaching means to engage the case. While there are various ways of providing this attachment -I prefer to provide the 'bolt- .openings 4, through which bolts are passed.
The casing or device to be suspended is provided omits rear with a-headcd lug 6.
This lug, it will be noted, has a narrow portion with a head 7.- Supplemental engaging lugs-8 are also provided on the rear of the case. While these lugs may be made m suspending device showing one inea s ofigattaching 1t toa case in various shapes to provide for their attachment to the hanger 1, I have. shown two forms ofsufpple lnental engaging lugs.- In the forms shown in Figs. 2 and 3,11 slot 9 and-a larger opening 10 are provided. A
headed bolt 11 passes through .eaeh of the.
openings 4 and the head 12 of the bolt engages in the larger opening '10 while the shank of the bolt passes through the slot 9 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. This lug 8, as shown in Fig. 4, may, however, be pro: vided merely with a screw threaded hole to receive a threaded bolt 13passing through each of the openings 4.
In using my device the hanger 1 maybe placed in'position on the cross-arm or other supporting means. The suspended case may thenbe lifted up until the head 7 of the lug 6 can pass through the larger part ofthe hanger, then the case may be lowered .parallel to itself with the narrow partol the lug 6 passing down through the narrow part 20f the hanger 1 until the lugs 8 come opposite the openings 4. If the mode of attachment of the lugs 8 shown in Fig. 2 is used the bolt heads 12 of the bolts 11 will readily pass into the openings in the lugs 8 If the lugs 8 are constructed as shown in Fig. 4 the threaded bolts 13 may be easily inserted throughthe openings 14 and screwed in position Since the narrow portion of the lug 6 is designed to beef alengt-h onlyslightly greater than the thickness of the hanger 1 and the diameter of this narrow. portion is designed to be but slightly less than the narrowed portion 2 of the hanger, and since further the heads 12 and shanks of the bolts- 11 are also designed to fit closely in the openings provided, it will be seen that the suspended casing and the hanger may be quickly and securely attached together.
What. I claim as new and desire to secure- 'by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of a substantially Ushaped hanger narrower at the bottom than at. the top, with a device to be suspended provided with a lug engagin in the narrowed portion of the hanger, an means in operative relation -with thedevice and the upper portion of the hanger adapted to fasten the device to the hanger.
2. The combination of a hanger narrower at the bottom than at the top provided with attaching and engaging portions, with a device to be suspendedprovided with :1 lug engaging in the narrowed portion of the hanger, means in the upper portion of said dence for suspending the same, and means in o'peretlve relation with said means" and said attaching portions for fastening the device to the hanger.
vided with a headed lug engaging in the narrowed portion of thehanger, and with Bolt; receiving openui gs, and bolts in the o the hanger and they attaching openings receiving openings of the suspended device. In witness whereof, I have oh 'dieuntoset my hand this 9th day of Febrnagy, 1911 4 WALTER AQHALL.
