COMBINED FENGE-POST AND WIBE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1?, 1913.
Application filed. August 22, 1912. Serial No. 716,465.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Isaac E. CHnNow'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rodeo, in the county of Grant, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Fence-Posts and Wire-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined fence post and wire fastener.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a fence post with a plurality of interchangeable and adjustable fasteners adapted for securing either woven wire fences of different heights or securing strand wires to the post at any predetermined dis tances apart.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener by means of which a fence may be readily attached to a post without the use of any tools whatsoever.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a fastener which includes a spring lock that is adapted to be released upon a slight pressure.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a post and fence fastener which is extremely simple in construction, it being composed of a minimum number of parts, and is therefore cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and point-ed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion,
size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a post constructed in accordance with my invention, the post showing a plurality of fasteners attached thereto, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a lon gitudinal sectional view taken on the line ;)3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 41 is a cross sectional view taken on the line %-4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping plate, and Fig. (3 is a perspective view of the spring lock.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates the body of a post which is preferably formed of metal although any other material may be employed if desired. Formed in the attaching face of the post is a plurality of spaced transverse grooves 6 adapted for receiving strand wires 7 of a fence. Projecting laterally from the attaching face of the postis a series of spaced lugs 88. Each pair of lugs is disposed in horizontal alinement, and each lug is formed with an elongated opening 9 for receiving a coupling pin 10, one end of said pin being formed with a head 12 and the other end being enlarged, as at 18, to permit of said end passing through the openings 9 of the lugs and adapted upon turning of the pin to lock the same against movement.
Extending laterally from the attaching face of the post below and in spaced relation to each pair of lugs 8 and arranged centrally thereof is a hook 1%, the bill 15 thereof extending downwardly or in a direction opposite the lugs 8.
My invention further comprises a plural ity of clamping plates 16. Each plate is formed fro-m a single piece of sheet metal, and has one end bent to form a hinge 18 for engagement with a respective pin 10. This plate is normally disposed against the attaching face of the post and serves to clamp the wires 7 in their respective grooves (3. The lower end of this plate is centrally slotted, as at 19, for receiving the hook 1st.
My invention further comprises a spring reference numeral 20. This lock is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, and consists of a head 21 and a shank 22. The head is formed with an elongated opening 23 of a length considerably greater than the length of the hook 11, and is adapted to receive said hook. This head is transverselycurved to form a convexo-concave head. The shaft which extends from the head is outwardly bowed and has its free end underbent, as at 24, for engagement with the pin 10 be tween the hinges 18 of the clamping plate 15. The end of the head opposite the shank normally engages under the bill 15 of the hook 14.
hen it is desired to adjust or remove the wire 7, pressure is exerted upon the outlock, which is designated as a whole by the wardly bowed shank 22, and as a result, the head 21 is caused to discharge itself from the bill 15 of the hook 1st. The lock can then be swung forwardly after which the plate 17 may likewise be swung outwardly to permit of the wires being readily shifted. When it is desired to attach the wires in place, the clamping plate is first positioned upon the wires and the lock is then swung downwardly upon the plate, the curved shank permitting the lower portion of the head to automatically engzwe under the bill 15 of the hook and therebydock said clamping plate against movement.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with a post, of a wire clamping plate supported thereon, and a yieldable means carried by the post and having locking engagement therewith and adapted in its normal position to lock the plate against the post and upon compression to be released from its locking position.
2. The combination with a post including a hook, of a wire clamping plate supported on the post, and a yieldable locking plate carried by the post and having interlocking engagement with the hook, said locking plate being adapted to be released from its engagement with the hook upon compresslon.
3. The combination with a post including a hook, of a pin supported transversely of the post in spaced relation to the hook, a
wire clamping plate supported on the pin for outward swinging movements, and means connected to the hook and pin for clamping the plate against the post.
4. The combination with a post including a hook, of a pin supported transversely of the post in spaced relation to the hook, a wire clamping plate supported on the pin for outward swinging movements, and a locking plate connected at one end to the pin and having interlocking engagement at its other end with the hook, said locking plate having a portion thereof outwardly bowed and adapted upon compression to .release the platerfrom its engagement with the hook.
5. The combination with a post having a pair of spaced lugs extending outwardly from one face thereof, a pin carried by said lugs, a hook projecting outwardly from the post and disposed below and in spaced relation to the lugs, a wire clamping plate supported on the pin for outward swinging movements, and a locking plate connected at one end to the pin and having interlocking engagement at its other end with the hook, said locking plate having a portion thereof outwardly bowed and adapted upon compression to release the plate from its engagement with the hook.
6. The combination with a post having a pair of spaced lugs extending outwardly from one face thereof, a pin carried by said lugs, a hook projecting outwardly from the post and disposed below and in spaced relation to the lugs,-a wire clamping plate supported on the pin for outward swinging movements, and a locking plate formed from sheet metal consisting of a head and a shank, the head being perforated for interlocking engagement with the hook and the shank having its end rearwardly bent for engagement with the pin, said shank being outwardly bowed and adapted upon com-- pression to release the head from its engagement with the hook.
7. The combination with a post having a pair of spaced lugs extending outwardly from one face thereof, a pin carried by said lugs, a hook projecting outwardly from the postand disposed below and in spaced re lation to the lugs, a wire clamping plate formed from sheet metal having spaced hinges extending from one end and engageable with said pin, the other end of said plate being formed with a slot for receiving the hook, and a locking plate connected at one end to the pin and having interlocking engagement at its other end with the hook, said locking plate having a portion thereof outwardly bowed and adapted upon compression to release the plate from its engagement with the hook.
8. In a wire fastener, a locking plate formed from sheet metal consisting of a head and a shank, the head being formed with an opening and the end of the shank being rearwardly bent.
9. In a wire fastener, a locking plate formed from sheet metal consisting of a head and a shank, the head being transversely bowed inwardly and the shank being transversely bowed outwardly.
10. In a wire fastener, a locking plate formed from sheet metal consisting of a head and a shank, the head being transversely bowed inwardly and the shank being transversely bowed outwardly, said head being formed with an opening and the end of the shank being bent rearwardly.
11. In a wire fastener, a wire clamping plate formed from sheet metal having a pair of spaced hinges extending from one end thereof,'the other end of the plate being centrally formed with an inwardly extending slot.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
