UNTER@ TATES TENT OFFTCE.
CHARLES S. PORTER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
TIE-BUTTON LOCK.
To all w/Lom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES S. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tie-Button Locks, of which the fo-llowing is a specification.
This invention relates vto tie fasteners, the object in view being to provide a simple device for locking a tie to a collar button, so as to prevent any possibility of the same becoming detached while in use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Tn the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of the tie fastener. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same applied. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof applied.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the body or attaching plate of the device, the same being provided with a central hole 2 adapted to receive the front collar button. Along one edge, this plate is provided with a series of small openings 3, adapted to receive stitches, by means of which the device as a whole is secured to the back of the tie. At its opposite edge, the plate is provided with inwardly projecting tabs t adapted to engage the bottom edge of the collar band for properly positioning the device in place relative to the collar, and sustaining the same in such position.
5 designates a locking plate which is secured to one face of the attaching plate by means of a pivot G, and this locking plate is provided with a key-hole slot 7, the larger portion of which is adapted to register eX- actly with the hole 2 in the attaching plate, and the narrower portion of which is described on the are of a circle, of which the pivot is the center.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will now be understood that after the device is passed over the head of a collar button, the locking plate is turned, so as to bring the nar- Specifeaton of Letters Patent.

rower portion of the slot into engagement with the shank of the button, and when in this position, it is impossible for the button and the fastening device to become disconnected.
The pivotal movement of the locking plate is regulated by means of a spring lip S, eX- tending back from the attaching plate, while the locking plate is cut away in its outer marginal edge to provide two stop shoulders 9 and 10, said shoulders being so spaced relatively to each other and the spring lip as to limit the movement of the locking plate in both directions, the spring lip also acting to frictionally retain the locking plate in locking position. The edge of the locking plate between the shoulders 9 and l0 is eccentric to the pivot 6, so that the linger tends to hold the locking plate at either limit of its movement.
By reversing the direction of movement of the locking plate, the larger portion of the slot therein is again brought into registration with the hole in the attaching plate, thereby admitting of the easy removal of the fastener from the collar button. This of course releases the tie to which the attaching plate is fastened.
What is claimed is:
A tie fastener, comprising an attaching plate to which a tie may be secured, said plate having a hole for the head of a collar button, laterally projecting tabs at the bottom of said plate adapted to engage under the bottom edge of a collar, a disk-shaped locking plate pivotally connected with the attachingplate and provided with a key` hole slot to receive the collar button, and a spring stop on the attaching plate, said locking plate beingcut away along a port-ion of its margin leaving spaced limiting shoulders which come into contact with said spring stop, and an eccentric edge which bears and rides against the spring stop.
In testimony whereof T ailiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WV. E. YOUNG.
