CLARENCE L. MATHEWS, OF COLTON, CALIFORNIA.
SETTING DEVICE.
Application filed June 19, 1911, Serial No. 634,136. Renewed October 23, 1912.
To all ac/1 0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. MATH- EWS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Colton, in the county of San Bernardino, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Setting Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a setting device for watch mechanism; and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel features and in the novel. and improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts will be apparent from the description and claim hereinafter.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved setting device which is positive in its operation and co-acts directly with the seconds hand and is adapted to be automatically operated by the yoke of either pendant setting or lever setting watch mechanism.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved device of the nature specified which is practical and serviceable, simple in construction, economical to manufacture, strong and durable in use, and effective in act-ion.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which is a partial view of watch mechanism with the invention applied thereto.
lit will be evident that in setting the hour and minute hands of watch mechanism to the correct time it is a desideratum that the seconds hand he set to begin movement in exact synchronism with the hour and minute hands at such correct time and thereby admit of the watch mechanism operating to indicate the time accurately to the second. To accomplish this end the novel and im proved setting device now to be described may be usedit consisting broadly of a piv- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 727,453.
oted lever constructed and arranged to have one end portion thereof in contact with the yoke of the watch mechanism and to have the other end portion thereof adapted to co-act directly with the seconds hand to stop the movement of the seconds hand in a predetermined position when said yoke is actuated.
In the construction of the device illustrated in the drawing the lever 36 is adapted to rock on pivot 37 suitably mounted on stationary cars 38 and one end of the lever is pressed upwardly by a spring 38 and adapted to slidably engage with the beveled portion 39 on the underside of the yoke 3 and the other end of the lever is suitably formed and provided with a pin 10 adapted to be moved through an opening 41 in the dial plate 4:2 to be interposed in the path of movement of the seconds hand when the end of the yoke adjacent to the setting wheel is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow.
I claim:
The combination with time indicating mechanism including a dial plate, a seconds hand, and a yoke, of stationary ears, a pivot bearing in said cars, a spring, a lever mounted on said pivot and arranged to be automatically operated by the yoke when the latter is actuated, said lever having one end thereof pressed by said spring into engagement with a beveled portion on the underside of the yoke, and a pin at the other end of said lever, said pin adapted to move through an opening in the dial plate and be disposed in the path of movement of the seconds hand when the lever is operated by the yoke, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Colton county of San Bernardino, State of California, this 12th day of June A. D. 1911.
FRED W. Lnwis, M. M. LARSEN.
