THREAD-GUIDE SUPPORT.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10,1913.
Application filed May 19, 1910. Serial No. 562,168.
i 0 all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT G. BEEDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Guide Supports, of which the following is a speciiication.
y invention relates to thread guide supports for spinning and twisting machines, and the object of my invention is to improve upon the construction of a thread guide snpport as now ordinarily made, and to provide a strong and durable thread guide support, of simple and inexpensive construction.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improvements as will be hereinafter fully described.
In my improvements in thread guide support` I preferably make the support of cast metal, and in three parts, one of said parts is the stationary part, detachably secured to the thread board or bar by screws, and has two open side bosses thereon, to loosely receive cylindrical projections on one of the other parts, to form a hinge connection between the two parts. The second part, which is hinged to the first mentioned part, is the movable part. Combined with the movable part is a third part, which is adjustably attached to the movable part, and acts to secure to said movable part the thread guide. The thread guide is preferably made of wire and has an open end eye on its outer end, and a closed eye on its inner end. The thread guide is adjust-able out and in, and also in the direction of the length of the thread guide support, and is held in its adjusted position by said third part, which is secured to the other movable part by two screws.
In connection with my improved thread guide support I may use a separate plate or block on the front edge of the thread board, which forms a stop for the movable part of the thread guide support when it is moved into its raised position; said stop or block ts into a groove or recess in the front edge of the thread board, and is held therein by the screws which attach the stationary part of the thread lguide support to the thread board, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawing :-Figure l is a plan view of a detached section of a thread board or bar, and a thread guide support,
embodying my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a section, on line 2, 2, Fig. l, looking in the direction of arrow a, same ligure; the broken lines show the raised position of the movable part. Fig. 3 is a front edge view of the parts shown in Fig. l, looking in the direction of arrow same figure, with the thread guide removed. Fig. 4 is a bottom or underside view of the movable part of the thread guide support, detached. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the stationary part of the thread guide support, and the movable part, detached from the thread board` and showing the position of the movable part relatively to the stationary part, when it is desired to disconnect said parts.
In the accompanying drawing, l is a detached section of a thread board or bar, 2 the stationary part of the thread guide support, which is shown attached to the front edge of the thread board or bar 1. The stationary part 2 is preferably made of cast metal, with two openings therethrough to receive the attaching screws 3, and two bosses 2 on its upper edge, one at each end. The bosses 2 are open on their inner side at 2` as shown in Fig. 5. Extending out from the front side of the stationary part 2, at each end thereof, and in alinement with and directly in front of the bosses 2 are projections 2, see Fig. 3.
Combined with the stationary part 2 is the movable part of the thread guide support, which is preferably made of cast metal, and consists of the part 4, of rounded shape on its rear edge, and provided with two cylin drical projections 4, see Fig. 4:, which are adapted to loosely extend into the two bosses 2 on the stationary part 2. The rounded rear edge portion of the part 4t is connected with the body of said part by a reduced portion or web 4b which is of a thickness somewhat less than the width of the openings at 2 at the inner sides of the bosses 2, for a reason which will hereinafter appear. The movable part i has preferably upon its underside a longitudinal groove or recess 4, see Fig. 2, and two elongated openings 4 therethrough, each to receive a screw 5, which extends loosely through an opening in the third part 6, forming the cap or holding piece for the thread guide wire 7. The screws 5 enter threaded holes in the nuts t3, which extend within the recess 4; in the part 4c, and are thus prevented from turning, see Fig. 2. The part G, forming the attaching cap for the guide wire 7, is recessed upon its underside, as shown by broken lines at 6', Fig. l, to loosely receive the eye 7 on the inner end of the thread guide wire 7, and allow said wire to be iiioved in and out, and held in its adjusted position by t-ightening the screws The thread guide wire 7, and also the cap or holding piece 6, may be adjusted in the direction ot the length of the thread guide support, by moving the screws 5 in the elongated holes 4 in the part 4. rIhe part 4 has in this instance projections 4u on its lower side, see Fig. 2, which rests on the projections 2 on the stationary part 2, to hold the thread guide support in a horizontal plane.
In connection with the thread guide su pport above described, l may use a separate plate or block 9, which extends in a groove or recess in the front edge of the thread board `or bar l, and has a lip or extension 9 on its upper end which extends upon the upper edge ot the thread board or bar l, see Fig. Q, and a projection or extension 9 on its opposite side, at its lower edge, which extends in a recess in the lower edge of the stationary part 2 ot the thread guide support, see Fig. 3. The plate or block 9 is held in the recess inthe thread board or bar l by the stationary part 2, which is secured to said board or bar by the screws 3, as above described. When the movable part of the thread guide support is raised, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 2, the reduced portion thereof, on its inner side, will rest on the upper edge of the plate or block 9, which acts to form a stop, and hold the movable part of the thread guide support in its raised position as shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be understood that my improved thread guide support, aside from the plate or block 9 and the attaching` screws and nuts, consists of only three simple parts which may be of cast or drop-forged metal, if desired, so as to require little or no finishing', or which may be of sheet metal pressed into shape.
In attaching the movable part 4 to the stationary part 2, in assembling the parts, the part 4 is caused to assume the position shown in Fig. 5 so as to bring the reduced part or web 4b into longitudinal register with the openings 2 between the ends ot the bosses 2 and the body of the part 2, and then by sliding the part 4 endwise relative to the part 2 the openings back of the cylindrical projection 4 may be brought into register with the bosses 2', when the part '4 isturned over forward, on the hinge afforded by the engaged cylindrical parts 4 and bosses 2', to the position shown in Figs. l and 2, to bring the parts into working position. When it is desired to detach the part 4 from the part 2 (the latter being dismounted trom the thread board or bar l) the said part 2 is turned over backward to the position shown in Fig. 5 and then by an endwise sliding movement, the said parts may be detached from each other, the web 4h sliding freely through one or the other of the openings 2 between the bosses 2 and the body of the part 2.
lt will also be observed that the construction herein shown and described provides means whereby the thread guide 7 may be adjusted either in or out or sidewise, when the screws 5 are loosened. rllhe rectangular recess, shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, loosely receiving the eye 7 at the inner end ot the thread guide, permits of the in and out adjustment, while the longitudinal adjustinent ot the plate 6, by virtue of the slots 4 in the plate 4, permits a lateral or sidewise adjustment ot the thread-guide, as hereinbetore stated.
The nuts S on the screws 5 are prevented from turning with said screws, when the latter are tightened or loosened, by reason ot the engagement of the said nuts with the side walls of the recess 4 in which vsaid nuts are received.
lt will be understood that the details of construction of my improvements may be varied it desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A thread guide support, for spinning and twisting machines, consisting ot a stationary metal part adapted to be secured to the thread board or bar and having open bosses at its ends, a second or movable metal part having a rounded rear edge portion with cylindrical ends separated by openings from the body of said part, said rounded rear edge portion being connected with the body ot' the said movable part by a reduced portion or web of a thickness which is less than the width of the openings between said bosses and the body of said stationary part, and means for attaching a thread guide to said movable part, said means comprising a clamping plate or block and attaching screws, and the said movable part having slots through which said screws may pass, to attord a sidewise or lateral adjustment ot the thread guide.
2. A thread guide support, for spinning and twisting machines comprising a pivoted part, as 4, having a longitudinal recess, as 4, on its under side, and slots, as 4', and a clamping plate attached to said pvoted part by screws passing through said slots and provided with nuts titting in said recess.
