THREAD-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 29, 1907.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Serial No. 404,248.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, VVILLIAM O. ALDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at I/Vhitinsville, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, and concise specification.
This invention relates to thread-boards, and consists in a novel means for clamping the thread-guides thereof to the fingerheads, whereby said thread-guides, although capable of both lateral and longitudinal adjustment, may be securely clamped in adjusted position beyond danger of accidental displacement, and whereby, also, such lateral and longitudinal adjustment may be readily made with nice exactitude and independently of each other if desired.
The invention is fully described below, and the particular features thereof are pointed out in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the one sheet of drawings which constitutes an integral part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a single finger-head and thread-guide in raised or vertical position and embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a separate perspective view of the holder.
The finger-head, designated 1, is of the usual form, being stamped out of sheet metal with a front and two side flanges, and secured to the thread-board rail (not shown) by means of hinge mechanism 2. The thread-guide may be of the usual pigtail or other desired form, with its shank 4 passing through the front flange of the finger-head and terminated in a hook or open loop, of which the side members 4* and 4 are substantially parallel and rest directly upon the flat under side of the finger-head body.
The looped shank of the guide is held upon the finger-head by means of a pivotal and angularly adjustable holder 5. This holder may be conveniently stamped from a strip of sheet metal and has one end portion double-grooved, as shown at 5", to fit over and upon the side members 4* and 4 and a bolt-hole 5* between the grooves. The other end portion is extended as a flat tongue 5' and provided with an arcuate slot 5.
The flat tongue is somewhat offset from the general plane of the grooved portion so that when the parts are assembled it rests directly against the flat body of the fingerhead, While the grooved portion fits snugly upon the looped shank. A bolt 6 fitting the finger-head and passing through the loop and bolt-hole 5 serves as a pivot upon which the holder and the thread-guide may be angular-1y adjusted, and a second bolt 7 passing through the arcuate slot 5 serves to clamp the tongue of the holder directly to the finger-head in any angular position to which it may have been moved on its pivot 6. The tongue 5, by reason of its shape and length, serves as a friction area against the finger-head and also as a lever, which two functions together afl'ord special security against lateral displacement. The looped shank of the thread-guide is longitudinally adjustable with respect to the holder and its pivot bolt by sliding it back and forth in the grooves, which adjustment may be made, by loosening the nut 6 and tightening the nut 7 a of the bolt 7, without disturbing the angular position of the holder. The thread-guide may thus be extended or retracted independently of its lateral adjustment. The tightening of the nut 6 serves to lock the guide in its longitudinal adjustment, but at the same time angular adjustment may be accomplished by loosening the nut 7*, the two clamping members of the holder being independent of each other and each controlling one of the adjustments. \Vashers are preferably interposed between the nuts and the holder, and for convenience the heads of the bolts are fitted in square holes in the finger-head to prevent their turning with the nuts.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:-
1. In a thread board, a finger-head, a thread guide, a holder therefor in which said guide is longitudinally adjustable, a bolt for clamping said holder and guide upon the finger-head and serving as a pivot for said holder and guide, in combination with independent clamping means for securing said holder in an adjusted position relative to said finger-head.
2. In a thread board, a finger-head, and a thread guide, in combination with two independent securing means for said guide, one
of them being adapted to clamp and secure the guide to the finger-head against longitudinal movement, but permitting lateral movement, and the other means being independently adapted to lock saidguide against lateral movement, but permitting longitudinal movement thereof.
3. In a thread board the combination with the finger head and thread guide, of a thread guide holder in which said guide is longitudinally adjustable, means for clamping said guide to the holder in its longitudinally adjusted position thereon and independent means for securing said holder to the finger head.
4:. In a thread board, a finger-head, a thread guide, a holder for said thread guide and pivotal clamping means for said holder adapted to clamp the guide upon the finger head, in combination with further clamping means eccentric to said first mentioned clamping means for adjustably securing said holder directly to the finger head.
5. In a thread board, a finger head, a pivoted thread guide holder provided with a groove, a thread guide longitudinally adjustable in said groove, means for clamping the same therein and independent means for adjustably clamping said holder to the finger-head.
6. In a thread board, a finger head and a thread guide having a looped shank, a clouble grooved holder fitting the loop thereof and provided with a bolt hole between said grooves, in combination with a clamping bolt in said hole and separate clamping means for securing said holder to the finger head in difierent angular relations with respect to said clamping bolt.
7. In a thread board, a finger head, a thread guide, a holder therefor in which said guide is longitudinally adjustable and a bolt for clamping said holder and guide upon the finger-head and serving as a pivot,
in combination with independent clamping means for securing said holder to the finger head, comprising a bolt in one of said parts engaging a slot in the other.
8. In a thread board, the combination with the finger head and thread guide, of a thread guide holder having a portion grooved to fit the thread guide, and provided with a fiat tongue in contact with the finger-head, means to clamp said grooved portion upon the thread guide and independent means for adjustably securing said tongue to the finger head.
9. In a thread board, the combination with the finger head, of an angularly adjustable holder thereon, a thread guide longitudinally adjustable in said holder and two independent clamping members respectively adapted for securing the guide between the holder and finger-head and clamping said holder against the fingerhead. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to the specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
