Description

W. P. ROSSMAN.
Stovep'ipe Damper. No.106,410.. Patented Aug.'1 6,1870.

the pipe.
as the circular is most comi ltinittd time .met @Mite WILLIAM F. ROSSMAN, OF HUDSON, NEW YORK.
Letters Potent No. 106,410, :lated August 16, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. RossnAN, of theV city ot'Hudson, in lthe county ot' Columbia and State ot' New York, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in the Construction of a Draught-Damper for retarding and shutting oit' or arresting the draughts ot' stove and furnace-pipes and i'lues and I do hercby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of' my' improved damper complete, with its several parts combined.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal view of the inner side ot' the handle haltl of the spindle of said damper.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal view of the exterior of the opposite half of the spindle o1" said damper, the inner side being perfectly fiat und plain.
Figure 4 is a lengitudinalview of the edge orV side of' spindle, the two parts, figs. 1 and 2, Combined.
My invention relates to theeoiistruction of a damper, with spindle, composed of two parts, and these parts corresponding with and fitted to each other in such a manner as to. securely embrace the damperplate, and to be easily inserted in and removed from My damper-plate A will be of the form of the iuterior ot the pipe, in which it is to be inserted; but
nouly used, I shall confine my description, t'or the most part, to that form.
Ihe circular plate A I pcrt'orate in the line of its diameter with a series of prick-punch holes, Sullicient to raise burs on the opposite side, and about haltaninch apart.
'.lhe spindlelsee ii halt-round pieces of spond with and fit circular plate (see lig. l)
The halt` ot' the spindle, cross-head of any suitable tute a handle.
0u itsinner or tint side i tudinal groove or dep gs. l and 2) is composed ot' tivo cast-iron, so made as to correeach other, and to embrace the A in the middle or line of its diameter,
tig. 2, is provided with a form or device, to constit is provided with a longiression, g, with occasional intel'- ruptions or cross-bars d 1l d. 1 th a crease or neck, e e, iig. 2, f the pipe.
It is also provided wi for receiving the edge o The'other half, p, at the handle-end, b anges b b.
' The two together form a round rod or spindle, which may be easily cut or made ot' any required length to suit the size or diameter ot' the pipe or flue wherein it is to be placed.
For the purpose of insel-tin proper size for the side sides of the pi nary damper. y
The handle halt' of s sei-ted throughthese hol e e receivesthe mai ing the hole.
The dampcr-plateAis then laid onto this halt within the pipe, the line ot' burs or punch-holes corresponding withpthe groove f/,hwith bur side down. These buis lying along in this groove, wherr the other half', p, tig. 3, is inserted, keep the plate in its place, and prevent the spindle from sliding out.
The little cross-hars d d d in the groove g also pre'- vent the spindle from sliding either way.
-The other lialt`,`p, iig. 3, is inserted at the handle end between the flanges b b,tiat side down, and passed through the hole j, on `the opposite side of the pipe.
The damper is now complete; but ifthe spindle should at anytime require tighteningn the holes in the pipe, a metallic wedge may be inserted between the halfp, fig. 3, and the plateA, thus separating the two parts ofthe spindle, so as to cause them to bear a little more againstthe margins of the holes in the pipe. Y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is
1. A damper, provided with spindle, composed of two parts, figs. I and 2, constructed as, or substantially as, and for the purpose herein set forth.
The combination and arrangement of plate A and the two parts of the spindle, represented by figs. 2 and 3, substantially in the manner and for the `purpose herein set forth.
(see fig. 3,) fits into the space c etween the two raised edges or g this dainpeiyha hole of spindle is punched through oppope, same as for inserting any ordipindle. (see iig. 2) is irst ines, so thatthe groove or crease 'gin or edge of the pipe surround- WVM. F. ROSSMAN.
