Letters Patent No. 106,402, dated August lfi, 1870.
MPROVEMENT 1N Boxes Fon BLUING, acc.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all uhcm. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW F. PICKENS, of New York, iu the count-y of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxesfor Blning-Powder, 85o.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theannexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view of my improvement, and
Figure 2, a central vertical section thereof.
My invention relates to boxes in which bluing-powder, pulver-ized spices, and the like, are put up for the trade,.the same box to serve as a dredgebox when adapted to family use; and
`1t consists in providing a circular-bored wooden box, having a perfor-able covering at one en d, with suitable metallic flange-d band for holding said covering andprotecting it from wear and breakage, as will more fully appeal' hereafter.
A, in the drawing, represents a box made by boring partially through from end to end of a cylindrical block of wood, leaving one' end solid to serve as a bottom.-
The covering B of the open end is formed of a piece of card-board, foil, or other suitable easily perforated material, cut in a form and size equal and similar to the end of the box.
A metallic band, C, tightly fitted around the top of the box, which is recessed to receive it, having a flange, C'foxtending` over theend thereof, protects the edges from injury, and l1old`s,'by means of said flange, the cover firmly in position.
When required for use, the paper orboard cover is punctured with a pin, and the bluing or other powder shaken ont as from a dredge-boit.r The outsidecylindrical surface is wrapped with proper labels, as shown.v
A boxA constructed as above described, with a flanged band, is much better than one with simply a covering of foil overlapping and pasted tothe sides, as such foil, in order to be readily punctured, illust `be so thin as to easily become broken around the edges, and allow the powder to escape.
What I claim as new, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A box for bluing and spice-powders, having a perforable cover at one end, and provided with a metallic flanged bandfor holding said cover in place, as de- `scribed.
