FRANCIS READ, OF IRELAND ISLAND, LA POILE, NEWFOUNDLAND.
HAT-PIN ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 5, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10,1913.
Serial No. 701,781.
To a who/11, it may o/morn:
lie it known that 1 Fnaxois limo, a citizen of New'l oimdland, residing at Il relaud island, La Poile, New'toundland, have invented certain new and useful lmprove ments in .llat-lin Attachments, of which the :t'ollowing is a specification.
The vresent invention relates to a device to be detachably secured upon the pointed end (it a hat pin to hold the pin from accidental displacement and to properly cover the pointed end of the same to prevent accidents.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device ot the above mentioned character, which is 11 321i} and attractive in appearance, simple in construction and reliable in operation.
Uther objects and advantages oi the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompallyi11g drawings forming a part o't this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat pin equipped with .my improved device, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is an end view of the device, big. t is an enlarged central longitudinal. sectional view through the device, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion ol. sheet-metal which bent to form portions ot. the device.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a hat pin provided near and spaced from its pointed end with an annular groove 2.
My device comprises a preferably (.iircular body portion 3, carrying extensions 4; and 5, which parts are stamped from a section oi. sheet-metal, as will. be readily apparent from Fig. The body portion 3 is preterably bent outwardly so that its inner surface is concave, as shown. The extensions 4 are bent at right angles to the body portion 3 and extend outwardly to be suitably connected with an element 6, of any suitable ornamental design. The element (5 is preterably made to simulate a butterfly. Tllhe body portion 3 is provided centrally tliereot with an opening 7 through which the pin 1 extends. The pointed end of the pin is inserted within a protecting easing 8, having its outer end closed. This protecting casing is soldered or otherwise attached to the or namental element ti. The extensions 5 are diametrically arranged with relation to the body portion 3 and are bent upon themselves between their ends, 'torming suitably spaced overlapping spring arms 5) and 10. These members or spring arms converge toward their 'lorward ends, which are disposed near each other to enter the annular groove 2 of the pin 1, thus normally holding the entire device upon the pin. The outer ends of the arms It) are curved or beat inwardly, as shown at ill, which outer portions 11. are lorced inwardly toward the body portion 3, when it is desired to move the inner ends 12 out of the groove 2, it being undcrstoml that the arms 9 and it) are formed suitably still and springy and tcnsioned to normallybring the ends .12 into the annular groove 2. It is thus seen that my device is exceedingly simple in construction and cheap. Rigidly connected with the opposite end ot the pin l is a head '1 which is preferably con strueted similar in appearance to the detachable device. This head eonnprises a body portion or flat plate Il l, provided with diametrically arranged arms 15, which are soldered or otherwise attached to an ornamental element jlti, ot the same appearance as the element (3. The pin '1. passes through openings in the body portion Til: and element 11(3 and is soldered to the same within such openings.
.lt: is to be understood that the Form of my invention heren'ith shown and described is to be taken as a preti'erred example ot the same and that certain changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit oi? the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
llaving thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a hat pin provided near its free end with an annular groove, of a detachable holding element, comprising a substantially circular sheetmeta 1. body portion ttorn'ied curved in crosssection and provided substantially centrally thereof with an opening, oppositely arranged spring strips carried by the body portion, said spring strips being bent between their ends :torming normally approximately parallel portions, the spring strips being adapted to enter the annular groove at their points of bending, the free ends of the outer portions terminating near the body portion, a protecting sleeve to receive the pointed end of the pin, and. means to connect the protecting sleeve with the body portion and retain the same spaced therefrom.
2. The combination with a hat pin provided near its free end with an annular groove, of a detachable holding device comprising an apertured body portion stamped from a section of sheet metal and having two diametrically arranged pairs of extensions, an ornamental element spaced from the body portion and connected with the extensions in one pair, a protecting casing carried by the ornamental element to receive the pointed end of the pin, the extensions in the other pair being bent upon themselves betweenv their ends for forming converging clamping elements the inner ends of said clamping elements adapted to enter within the annular groove, each clamping element being formed of inner and outer spaced spring arms, and the outer spring arm extending outwardly beyond the inner spring arm and being bent inwardly about the same and adapted to dis- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
