Application tiled .February 19, 1913. Serial No. 749,.545.
7b ait fic/rom, t may comer/L.'
te it known that t, NouuaN I). lyisnor, a citizen ol' thc United States ot America, residing at Los ngeles, in the county o'l lios Angeles, State ot (lalit'ornia, have invented. a certain new and usetful Mechanism tor Raising or Lowering Beds; and l' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lnechanism t'or raising or lowering a bed-more particularly designed lor use in connection with a bed having a combined seat and compartment such as more fully shown in my application tiled July 22nd, 1912, Serial No. 711,0,9S2---v and it may be said to consist in the provision ot the novel and advantageous `features and in the novel and improvetfl conm struction, arrangement and combination ot parts as will be apparent trom the description and claims which follow hereinafter.
@ne object oit' the invention is to provide novel and improved mechanism operatively connected between the foldable seat and the bed support, adapted to raise or lower the bed and whereby the bed is eounterbalanced by the seat when the latter is folded or unfolded in use.
Further objects oit the invention are to provide mechanism ot the nature specitied which is simple in character, strong and durable, easy to install and operate, convenient to use, ettective in action, permits the use o'l a Seat of the usual height, and produces a compact arrangeinentl oft' the parts.
Other objects and the advantages ot the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration ot the tollowing descril'ition ot the pre'lerred 'torin o't construction embodying the invention7 taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in whieh-- Figure l is a broken and sectional view oli the construction embodying the invention, showing the bed support Ain lowered position; Fig. Q is a broken and sectional view olf the construction showing the seat 'folded and the bcdv support in raised position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken side elevational view showing the seat 'folded and the mechanism operatively connecting the seat with the bed support; Fig. ltis an enlarged broken 'front elevational view ot' the parts shown in Fig.
il, with the l'otdablc seat removed; lt`ig. 5 is an enlarged broken side elevational view oli one ot" the rear caster brackets and parts mounted thereon: Fig. t3 is an enlarged partly broken and sectional view taken on the line t3 t3 olf Fig. Q, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged elevational View ot one olE the guide rollers mounted on the side wall ot the compartment.
The bed tt is adapted to be disposed within a suitable compartment indicated at t) combined with a 'toldable seat indicated at l0. lhe scat l() consists ot the sections l1, hinged together and adapted to liorm thc back portion oit the seat, the sections l2 and 'til hinged together and adapted to vtorm thc lront portion ot' the seat, and the sections tft and l5 hinged together and adapted to torni the horizontal portion ol the seat extending between the liront portion and the back portion and detachable there't'rom.
The side bars to, preterably ot" channel. iron, have the rcar end portion thereot Suitably secured to brackets t7 on which are rotatively mounted floor casters 't8 and also side or wall casters it); the vt'olavard cnd ot the side bars jlrtt being suitably secured to brackets 2() on which are rotatively mounted Vtloor casters 2l.
.l`he support 22 tor the springs and mattress Qlpreferably consists of the side angle irons 25 which have their 'lront end portion suitably secured to the cross angle iron 2li and have their rear end portion suitably secured to cross angle iron 2T. llead and loot trames JS 'tor the bed may be suitably secured to the support 22. ,lhe cross angle iron 27 has the downwardly projectingI ttange thcreot titted in angular notches il() Formed in the upper part ol the bracketst7; bolts ll beingl passed through lugs on thc brackets 't7 and also t'reely through the [lange to hold the angle iron Q7 movably in position on the brackets i7.
lhe brackets Q() hav t an upward extension 12 thereon and are suitably secured to the section 'IQ ot the l'ront; portion ol thc scat. A\n angular levcr il?, has thc elbow thereof disposed between ears E- lon the extension 32 and is mounted on a pivot 535 bearing in the ears Bit. screw lt is provided on the lever 33 to set the lever il?) in position on the pivot 35. rIhc lever 3? has one end thereoil" connected by pivot 37 to lug 3S provided on plate f5?) suitably secured to the section llt o'l the seat; the other end portion o'l the lever 33 being connected by pivot L10 to the upper end of a link 41 which has on its lower end the pivot 42 fitted in a suitable bearing 43 on the side angle irons 25.
Rollers t-l, more clearly shown in Figs. G and 7, may be suitably mounted in the forward end portion of the side walls of the compartment 9 and adapted to contact with and guide the side bars 1G.
From the foregoing and by referring to the drawings, it will be understood that when the sections 12, 13, 14, and 1.5 of the seat are unfolded, see Fig. 1, the operative connections between the seat and the bed support move the forward end portion of the bed support to lowered position. lVhen the sections 15, 14 and 18 are folded together against the section 12, see Fig. 2, the forward end portion of the bed support is moved to raised position. The bed is easily and quickly raised or lowered when the sections of the seat are folded or unfolded, for the reason that the operative connections between the seat and bed support are such that the seat is adapted to counterbalance the bed.
It will be apparent that the operative connections between the seat and the bed support may be arranged on either or both sides of the bed support.
lVhile one form of construction embody ing the invention has been particularly illustrated and described, there are many changes and modifications thereof that will be apparent t0 those skilled in the art, wherefore the right is reserved to lall such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
