BED-BRACE.
Application filed March 19, 1913.
To all IJJ/tO/lt J2 may concern:
lie it known that I, un/air I. Ilanr, a citizen of the United States, residing at (ialax, in the county of (irayson and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Bed-Brace, of which the following is a speci- .i'ica t i on.
The invention relates to improvements in bed braces.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of braces for beds and analogous articles of furniture, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and ellicient: bed brace of strong and durable construction, adapted to be easily operated and ttitPtllJlU oi exerting a powerful pull on a plurality oi braces, whereby the head and :loot boards and the side rails of a bed are firmly held together.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination Ofli parts hereinafter fully descril'ied, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the clain'i hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the 'torm, proportion, size and minor details ot construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:-Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed brace, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a bed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional. view of the central portion of the bed brace. Fig. 2., is a detail perspective View oi the tightening device.
Like numerals ot reierence designate cor responding parts in. all the figures ol' the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred en'ibodiment ot the invention, the bed brace comprises in its construction a plurality of approximately diagonally disposed braces 1, each extending from one oi the corner posts 2 oi. a bed 3 to the opposite side rail l thereof and con- .nected to the latter at a point beyond the center oi the same. The braces '1, which are designed to be constructed of wire, or other suitable material, are preferably secured to the corner posts and side rails by screw eyes 5 or other suitable fastening means, the terminals of the wire being passed through Specification of Letters Patent.

the eyesrand wrapped around the braces adjacent to the eyes, but the ends of the braces may be secured to the bed in any other desired manner. The braces, which are four in number, and arranged in pairs and the pairs oi braces cross each other centrally of the bed, two oi the points of crossing being in longitudinal alinement and the other points oi. crossing being in transverse alinement. The members oi. each pair of braces are straight and are disposed in parallelism be'lore acted on by a tightening or stretching device it, which is connected with the braces at the longitudinally alined points of crossing by links 7, constructed of wire or other suitable material and provided at their terminals with inner and outer hooks S and t). The outer hooks engage the crossed braces and the inner hooks are engaged by the tensioning or tightening device, which consists oi. a horizontally coiled piece of rod metal or other suitable material. The links extend longitudinally of the bed, and the inner hooks are linked into the coils of the tightening or stretching devici at dia1netrically opposite points, and when the said device is rotated in a direction to screw or draw the links inwardly, the braces are also drawn inwardly and placed under the desired tension. The coils of the tightening device are relatively large, and the said device retains the braces under the desired tension without requiring any locking nleans For holding the said device in its adjustment. The tightening or stretching device is provided at. the outer end of the coiled portion with an extension 1t), iorming a handle and provided at its inner end with angular bends it and 12, which oil'set the handle from the plane oi? the braces. The coiled portion oi the tightening or stretching device is located in the central space bounded by the crossed inner portions of the braces, and the handle or extension 10, which is horizontally disposed, extends beyond the said space and is adapted to be readily grasped by the operator and does not interiere with the use oi the bed springs or any other Form oi mattress support.
\Vhat is claimed isz-- A bed brace comprising a plurality of crossed braces, links connected with the braces at their points oi? crossing, and a stretching or tightening device consisting of a horizontally coiled portion connected at In testimony, that I claim the foregoing dlametrlcally opposite points With the said as my own, I have hereto affixed n1y signalinks, and a handle extendlng from the outer ture in the presence of two wltnesses.
end of the coiled portion and provided at its WILLIAM ISAAC HARP. inner portion with offsetting bends adapted Witnesses:
to arrange the said handle beyond the plane O. OsoAR TAYLOR,
of the said braces. M. G. CooMns.
