To all (whom t may concern;
Be it known that we, -LUiiwIe CUBELIC,
a subject of the King ofy Prussia, residing' certain 'new-and useful Improvements in' a specification.
Steam-Turbines, of which the 'following is The present invention relates to fsteam turbines and is illustrated as. applied' to v bines than the one illustrated.
mixed pressure turbines, z'. e., vturbines that areoperated b v low pressure steam, or by a mixture of low and high pressure steam, or by high'pressure steam only; but the invention is applicable to other types of tur'- The iiivention has for its object to-.i mprove the construction.l and 'operation of such turbines and their controlling I 'neclia' nism whereby said turbines will utilize thesteam to lbette'r advantage than heretofore.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view of la'turbine .showing an illustrative embodimfent of our 'inventiori. ln the `ii'st or high .pressure section of the turbine we employ several -wheels or several rows of buckets with their coperating in terniediate buckets and abstract the'velocity' of the steam fractionally by successive opcrations. A single larger wli'eel can be used if preferred. Low pressure steam is admitted to the low pressure stages through' the pipe Z5 containing a throttle valveti. The turbine is intended to be operated by this low pressure steam to as large an extent as possible. Live o r high pressure steam is used to supplement-the low pressure supply when the latter is insufficient to meet the de mand of the turbine. The pipe beyond thevalvc 2o is divided in order to supply the low pressure conduit 9 and the second lonT pressure,I conduit i0. i them "is a'lpassaige 29 to which steam can enter underthel control of slide -or other "suitable valves 3Q and 31. The valves may be `operated byik substantiallythe same mechas nism asI the valves of our co-peiiding apnovel features of tlielturbine shown but not claimed herein are claimed in said application. VFor low pressiire operation with steam entering the conduit 10 allof the subsequent stages-will bein service and the valves 30 and 31 will be closed. For mixed ressur'e' operation. highi pressure steam ii'om the pipe 12 will ente the .admission nozzle 7 and low pressure steam will enter by the conduit 9 in'which case valve 28 will be closed and valve 27 open. As to the last 4tvvo groups ofstages one or@ both may be cut out.
Opening valve 81 and "i closing valve 30 results in shunting the last group of stages Whichiis the arrangement we prefer under said circumstances. VVhen operating with stages The reason for cutting out stages isllthat the high pressure steam contains musi-,more energy than the low pressure steam and hence a smaller totalxvolume is passed through the machine. Since the working passi'ges in the eXtreme low pressure stages are uielatively large for that would ass through them under conditions of mixed pressure or high pressi reoperation, and
The
highpressure steam alone, the valve 30 is-V .opened to shunt l both since failure to p'roperl till the passa es results in uneconomical oiieration, We pre er to so design the turbin as a whole that these stages ni'ay cut crease the efficiency by using only such sta ges tion. The di'lferent con itions of operation will determine'whether one or more of-said lou' pressure groups of; stages will be cut out. f I v ln accordance with the provisions of the 'patent statutes. we have' described tlieprinciple of operation of out' invention, together out and thereby in as are capable of effectve, economical ac fluid to the vided into a plurality of stages, a conduit for admitting binea conduit` for admitting low pressure tluid to the turbine', and means for changing the number oit active W 'pressure fluid stages When the turbine is operating on steam supplied Wholly er in part. by the high pressureeonduit. e
2. In combination, a steam turbine divided into a plurality of stages, conduits admitting high and low pressure motive turbine, controlling valves therefor, and valve means for changing the number ot'aetive leu7 pressure stages..
Sfln combination, a steam turbine divided into a, plurality 01"" stages, a conduit admitting-high pressure motive tluid to the turbine, conduits admitting low pressure motive fluid -to stages of the turbine et ditiierent pressures, and Valve mechanism fer vcontrolling the number et active lewpressure stages.
4. In combination, a steam turbine divided into a plurality of stages, a conduit admitting-high pressure motive tluid to the turbine, conduits admitting low pressure high pressure fluid to the turmotive fluid to'stages of the turbine of different pressures, valve mechanism for controlling the passage of Huid through said conduits, and means for cutting out one or more stages when the turbine is operating on the mixed or high pressure plan.
5. In combination, a multi-stage turbine comprising a stage that utilizes Vhigh pressure lluid only, one or more stages that no1'- mally utilize 10W pressure but which utilize high pressure fluid only when the turbine is operating on the mixed pressure plan, and stages that normallyntilize low pressure tiuid but which utilize both low and high pressurel'luid when the turbine is operating on the mixed pressure plan, and means for cutting out certain et the low pressure stages when the turbine is operating on the mixed or high pressure plan.
In witness whereof, We have hereunto set our hands.
