To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM L. WVEIDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in'the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in License-Tag Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in license tag holders, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and efiective device of this character which may be supported in any suitable manner upon a vehicle for displaying a license tag, card or other display device.

A further object of the invention is to provide in combination with the license tag holder, a suitable lamp bracket for carrying a lamp or lantern so that the rays of light therefrom will fall upon the license tag permitting the same to be seen at night.

A further object of the invention is to construct the license tag holder so that it will be adjustable being designed to receive and hold license tags of different sizes.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby a license tag may be readily and quickly removed or inserted and when the license tag is mounted in the holder, the same will be prevented from swinging or rattling, thus overcoming the many disadvantages encountered in the present means of fastening the tags in position.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of a license tag holder made in accordance with myimprovement showing the license tag mounted therein. Fig. 2, a similar view, the license tag being removed. Fig. 3, an upper edge view thereof. Fig. 4, a rear elevation, and Fig. 5, an end view thereof.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a base plate provided with upwardly projecting arms 3, the major portions of which lie in plane parallel to such a position that the rays of light therefrom will fall upon the license tag for properly illuminating the same so that it may be read at night. The base plate 2, arms 3, and lamp bracket 4, are preferably formed of a single casting so that a relatively inexpensive but strong device is produced.

6 denotes the hinged retaining device, comprising a bar 7 having a longitudinal groove 8 in the under face thereof, said groove being preferably V shaped in cross section. With the ends of the bar 7 are formed the arms 9 which are pivotally hinged in the bifurcated ends of the upwardly projecting arms 3 by rivets 10 or their equivalent. In the arms 3 and 9 are formed holes 11 for the reception of the ends of the helical springs 12, said springs normally pulling the retaining bar 7 downward or toward the base plate 2. .In order that the retaining bar may be raised against the action of the springs 12, I form integral with the said retaining bar 7 a forwardly projecting handle or finger hold 13.

Secured to the front face of the base plate 2 is a supporting plate 14, the lower edge of which is bent back upon itself as at 15 to form the groove 16 in which sets the lower edge of the license tag, the upper end of the latter registering with the groove 8 in the retaining bar 7.

The device may be secured directly to a vehicle or it may be supported from the vehicle by a suitable bracket to which the device is fastened by some suitable attaching means passing through the holes 17.

In practice, the grooves 8 and 16 may be made of sufficient size to hold one or more license tags, but only one license tag should be carried at a time because of the weight thereof and the stringent laws of some localities.

When it is desired to remove the license tag either to prevent the theft and unauthorized use thereof or to change the tag of one locality for another, the handle 13 is hinged retaining bar also permits the device to be used with different sized license tags.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown as these may be varied within limits of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is

1. A license tag holder comprising a base plate, a pair of upwardly projecting arms formed integral with the base plate, a grooved retaining bar hinged to the free ends of said arms, means for normally drawing said retaining bar toward the base plate,

and a grooved supporting plate, supported by the base plate, said supporting plate and retaining bar adapted to hold a license tag between them.

2. A license tag holder comprising a base plate, a pair of upwardly projecting arms formed integral with the base plate, a grooved retaining bar hinged to the free ends of said arms, means for normally drawing said retaining bar toward the base plate, and a lamp bracket formed integral with the base plate projecting from one side edge thereof and to the front of the base plate.
