BOTTLE-STOPPEB.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT D. HITES and HARRY R. VAN Gononn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Ellwood City, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a bottle stopper, and the objects of our invention are to provide a novel closure for a bottle, jug or similar receptacle that can be open-ed without being removed from the bottle or receptacle, and to provide a closure for positively sealing the neck of a receptacle, as will be hereinafter set forth, whereby the contents of the receptacle can not evaporate or be injured by the accumulation of matter upon the top of the closure.
Further objects of our invention are to provide a bottle closure in the form of a spirally moved stopper which in a locked position seals the bottle and in a raised position permits of the contents being removed from the bottle, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate and highly efficient as a closure for various kinds of receptacles.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle neck provided with a stopper, the same being shown in a lowered posit-ion. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the stopper in an elevated position. Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line IIIIII of Fig, 1, showing a line IIII of the section shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. .4 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle neck with the stopper in elevation.
To put our invention into practice we provide the inner wall of a bottle neck 1 with an annular groove 2 that is located adjacent to the outer end of the bottle neck.
This groove has diametrically opposed partitions 3 dividing the groove into two parts.

Movably mounted in the groove 2 is a flat compression spring 4 having an offset portion 5 intermediate the ends thereof and this offset portion 5 extends into a spiral. groove 6 formed in a cylindrical stopper 7..-
The outer end of the stopper 7 has a cap or head. 8 corresponding in diameter to the bottle neck 1 to protect the pouring edge of the bottleneck and permit of a stopper being moved within the bottle neck. The stopper has a longitudinal groove 9 extending from the inner end thereof to a point in proximity to the head 8.
When the stopper 7 is rotated it is raised or lowered according to the direction of rotation. hen raised to the position shown in Fig. 2 the contents of a bottle can be removed through the medium of the groove 9 and when lowered, as shown' in Fig. 1, the outer end of the groove 9 is sealed and the contents of the bottle cannot be removed.
The stopper can be made of a vitreous material similar to the bottle neck and the principle of our invention applied to jugs, carboys and various kinds of receptacles.
A gasket 10 made of rubber or other suitable material can be interposed between the head 8 and the upper end of the bottle.
I hat we claim is In a bottle stopper, the combination with a bottle neck having the inner wall thereof in proximity to its top edge formed with an annular groove divided into two divisions by a pair of diametrically opposed shoulders, an elongated cylindrical stopper movably mounted within said neck and hav ing a peripheral spiral groove at a point between its center and its upper end, a fiat spring having its ends extending into one of the divisions of the groove in said bottle neck and having a central ofiset portion extending into the groove of the stopper to limit the movement of the latter in the bottle neck, said stopper having a longitudinal groove extending through its inner ends to a point above the spiral groove, and a head carried by the outer end of the stopper.
