BOTTLE-GAP,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filcfi August 14, 1911. Serial 1%. 6%,855
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY R. Conny, a citizenoi the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough oi: Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BottloCaps, of which the fob lowing is e specification.
The object of my invention is to' provide a device of this class which will securely close and seal the bottie to which it is attached and yet permit either it ready removal or implecement in position. This object is accomplished by my invention one embodiment of which is hereinafter set forth.
For a more particular description thereoi", reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which;
Figure tie a sicle elevation of a top of e bottle or jsr provicied with my improved cap. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line w-m of Fig.1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig 3 is en elevation of the jar neck. 7
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designote similar parts.
My improved cap comprises e top 1 and pendentbend or iiange 2. It may be aclventegeously applied to a bottle or jar A, the neck of which has exterioriy formed inciin'ed engaging threads at or otherwise suitably constructed. cap engaging means. Be low the threads 4: is a circumferential annu- 1m. bead 3 which preferably has a rounded surface as show-n in cross-section'in Fig. 2. To pioviole ineenstor engaging the cap with the threatis iugsvo are formed by trans verseiy slitting the band 2, the slit being slightly inclined to meet the inclination of the threo cis 4, the lugs 5 have their operative or engaging portions 5 extemiing inwerclly so as to engage the lower surface of the threads.
At 6 are spring tabs or lips which depend from the band 2 and. which are placed at interveis preferably between the roughened grips 8. It will be noted that the forcing in of the metal of the band 2 in enter to a sheet metal cop having a top portion and lower edge thereof, inwardly extentiing lugs form the lugs 5 causes a portion of the metal of the tabs or lips 6 to be forced inwardly,- whereby the logs are formed partly in the bond. and partly in'the tabs: The novel feature of this construction is that the lugs 5 are adjacent to and cooperate withthe snring tabs or lips 6, so that both elements will cooperate together to guide and seat the cap on the bottle or jar and to retain the cop in place against inecivertent release by reason of theforcible or frictional engagementof the lips or tlibs 6 with the bead 3 over which the tabs or lips move, while the cap is being forceci downwardly in position and which are gradually expanded by'the expending surface or the bead, thereby retaining vthe cup in place and causing the lugs 5 to more forcibly engage the threads 4-. The cap 1 is also provided with a suitable pecking 9 which presses against an ennulei: portion 10 at the top of the bottle Qwhereby a tight seal is efiected. The cap is preferably made of sheet metal, and the construction allows very thin metal to be used What I claim-is:
1. The combination with a bottle or jar having a threaded neck and an annular encirciing bead tread below the said threetis;
pendent bend, tabs extending from said hand adapted to 'engage the bead on-the bottle neck, and. lugs integral with said bend engaging said threaded neck, and located in line with said band tabs.
2. The combination with a bottle or jar having at threaded neck and an annular encircling head, a sheet metal cap having a top portion ohd a peripheral bend, tabsintegral with said band and depentiing from the integral with seid band and adjacent the tabs and cooperating therewith-for engagement with said! threaded neck, tabs be; low said lugs serving to resilientty engage x said bead, and the tabs being bendatiigoutwerdly to permit this engagement of I respective lugs from said threaded neck.
3. The combination with a bottle or having a neck with inclined threads and an annular encircling bead, projecting below 10 1 av sheet metal p having a top port-ion. and pendent bami, tabs extending from saim'band adapted to engage the head on the bottle neck, and inclined lugs adaptsaid. threads.
ed to engage saic linclined threads and haw I ing operative orengaging portions in line with said tabs.
