UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIS'ION WIRT GREENWOOD, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
INFANTS STOOL AND BATH HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIs'rON YVIRT GREENWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Infants Stool and Bath Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a new and improved infants stool and supports for an infant during bathing, the same apparatus serving both purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide a safe and comfortable support for young infants during the above-named operations, thus doing away with the discomfort, awkwardness and fear caused by the endeavors of the attendant to hold a wriggling and slippery babe with one hand while working at it with the other.
The set of holders comprising my invention is designed to hold the infant securely in the two most natural positions for obtaining evacuations of the bowels, and by the use of the holders three times daily, at stated periods, a regular habit is established in the child, which not only conserves its health but saves much labor in its care. When used for the bath, the set of holders shown enables all parts of the child to be rapidly and effectively cleansed, those parts of the body covered by the holder in its first position being exposed for cleansing by the companion holder in the childs second position; and the attendant being able to employ both hands in the work, the bath is speedily given, thus eliminating the danger of long exposure or the inconvenience of washing and drying a portion of the body at a time. I attain these objects by the apparatuses shown in the accompanying drawings in whioh- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the infant reclining on its back, and with the face, arms, feet, and part of its body exposed for the bath. Fig. 2 is a similar view which shows the infant while lying face downward and with the back of the head and body exposed for the bath. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the stools of Figs. 1 and 2, corresponding parts of Figs. 1 and 2, and Figs. 3 and 4, being similarly lettered and numbered. Figs. 5 and 6 are plan views of the pads to be used with the holders of Figs. 1 and 2.
Specification of Letters Patent.

The child may be strapped in and left, in either posltion, for a movement of the bowels. In case the child is to remain some little time in the holders, waiting for a complete evacuation, the cushions shown in plan in Figs. 5 and 6 are to be used with the holders of Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. Figs. 3 and t show perspective views of the two stools of Figs. 1 and 2; corresponding parts of Figs. 3 and 4 being similarly lettered and numbered.
In Figs. 1 and 2 AB is formed like a U-shaped channel, comformable to the back of a child, and made long enough to accommodate infants of difierent lengths of body. The portion C is separate from A-B, it having the projection f, which slides through a sleeve and may be adjusted in height by the set-screw c. This adjustment is for varying lengths of limb. (Both holders are symmetrical as to a central plane parallel with the plane of the drawing, hence duplicate portions not shown will be understood to be on the opposite sides from those shown.) The portion C supports the calf of the leg; it and its counterpart for the other leg are so placed as to spread the knees apart. Four legs support the stool, the pair 12 and the pair 3-4e Each pair spreads apart at the feet, for a stable equilibrium (this applies to both figures). The rod 9l011 furnishes a hand-hold for the amusement of the child, and is firmly held by the pair of braces 87. The rod 910l1 and the braces 87 are readily removed. The strap 5-6 is to insure safety if the attendantleaves the child. The pad a7), Fig. 5, made of suitable soft material, is to protect, the back of the child while waiting for bowel movements. For purposes ofthe bath no pad is needed as the entire bath need occupy no more than one or two minutes. A water-proof pad may be used at all times, however. In Fig. 2 also the companion stool is shown, the supporting portions of which are DE for the head and trunk, and FG a stirrup for the leg. DE has an aperture at its I pair 2122 and the pair 23-24. Both aairs spread widely at the feet for stability. The pair 222l starts from points near the center of the childs abdomen and, spreading apart, throws the knees and feet of the child apart. The stirrup F-G is so placed as to remove a portion of the weight of the body from the abdomen by supporting the legs, in the position shown. This stirrup F-G is secured to the brace 25-26. The stirrup is open at the end in front of the knee, and closed by the head 27 for the sole of the foot to press against. The strap 30 may be used if'desired. A rod for the hands to grasp. is shown in end view at 31. The upper part of the brace 25-26, designated by32, is also made of convenient form to be grasped by the hand. Fig. 5 shows the pad for the stool of Fig. 1. The aperture for the face .is shown at y, widened at w and w for the arms; the portion 2 of the pad rests upon 28-29 (Fig. 2) under the abdomen and chest.
Figs. 3 and 4: show perspective views of the two stools, corresponding parts of Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 being similarly lettered and numbered. The stool of Fig. 3 (corresponding to the stool of Fig. 1) shows the trough A-B, with concave surface upward, for supporting the infant face upward; the elevated spreading supports for the calves of the legs are shown in the portion 0-0; the four legs supporting AB are numbered 21, 2l, 4.-3, 4-3, respectively, the part A-B being cut away on the jagged line 00--a2 in order to show the leg 2l; 5 and 5 show the holes for a. retaining strap. The stool of Fig. 4: (corresponding to the stool of Fig. 2) shows the trough DE, with concave surface upward, for supporting the infant face downward; the opening for the face is indicated by nm,' the four legs supporting DE are numbered 21-22; 2122; 23-2t; 232 f respectively; the stirrups for supporting the leg below the knee are F-G and F-G; the toes of the feet would be at 27 and 27; the braces 25-26 and 2526 are shown; also holes for strap at 80 and 30.
In using the set of stools shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the infant may be removed from one and placed upon the other by the hands, or, just as safely and more-conveniently, as follows: Starting with the child in the position shown in Fig. 1, 1st, remove rod 91011 with attached braces 78, also strap 5-6; 2d, put cushion of Fig. 5 in place over the child; 3d, put the stool of Fig. 2 upon the cushion, in inverted position (legs up); 4th, with one hand below AB and the other holding the inverted stool closely against the child, revolve both stools in the direction of the curved arrow, when the first stool can be removed, leaving the child in the'position of the stool of Fig.
2. (Note: The pads may or may not be used, as required.)
Modifications may be made in details of construction shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The stools may be constructed of wood or metal, or combinations of both, or other rigid materials, with suitable finish, to permit them to be cleansed with hot water and soap. They may be constructed of enameled ironware with adjustments of nickeled steel. The cushions or pads may be-made of any suitably soft material, preferably waterproof.
Having now described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pair of infants holders, each stably mounted upon standards; one of said pair consisting of an inclined shallow concave trough conformable to the head and back of an infant, with elevated spreading supports at the lower extremity of said trough for the legs of said infant; the other of said pair consisting of an inclined shallow concave trough conformable to the face and front surfaces of the body of saidinfant, and having stirrups below the plane of said trough for supporting the legs of said infant in a flexed position: substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. A pair of infants holders, each stably mounted upon standards: one of said pair consisting of an inclined shallow concave trough conformable to the head and back of an infant, with elevated spreading supports at the lower extremity of said trough for the legs of said infant; the other of said pair consisting of an inclined shallowconcave trough conformable to the face and front surfaces of the body of an infant, 7
said trough having an aperture for the face, and additional supports below the plane of said trough for the flexed legs of said infant: substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
