Patented May 20, 1913.
Application filed October 1, 1.912. Serial No. 723,296.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I EDWARD L. Srrrons, a
ofLansdowne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electrical fixtures and the object of my invention is to furnish a portable electric fixture which by the simple substitution of parts, will be equally adapted for the lightmg of a cigar or cigarette or for a trouble lamp.
' My invention is designedpri marily for use in connection with automobiles or motor boats, it will. be understood, however, that I do not desire to limit myself to its use in any particular connection for it will be apparent that it may be of very general application.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views :Figure 1, is a central longitudinal sectionalyiew of my electrical fixture carrying a ci ar or cigarette lighter: Fig. 2, a similar view of the fixture carrying an electric light: Fyig." 3, a side elevation of the fixture and a keeper for carrying it Fig. 4, a front ele- I vation of Fig. 1.
i 5 is a shell, preferably but not necessarily, of cylindrical shape constructed of some insulating material as hard rubber, wood, fiberi diameter and at one end carries a socket 6 rated screw plug 7 the exteriorly threaded stem 8 of which is screwed into the base of socket 6 which passes int-0 a hole formed in the end wall of the shell 5 and the heag 90f which engages the outer side of them wall as shown. v
The socket 6 carries interiorly a porcelain washer 10 to which is attached an electrical contact 11, adapted to be secured to a line wire 12, and a threadedneck 13 adapted to carry interchangeably a box 14 carrying a resistance coil 15, Figs. 1 and 4 or an electric lamp 16, Fig. 2, either one oi which may be screwed into or out of the neck 13 as may be desired.
16 is a flat spring one end of which is in 7 electrical connection with the metallic part of socket 9, which is in electrical connection withthe second line wire 17, and 18 is a push button which being pressed engages The metal frame of resistance coil 14 and establishes a current in the fine wire 19 one endgof which is connected to the metal part of the metal frame of box 14 and the other end of which is in engagement with elec-v trical contact 11 connected to the first line wire 12, or with one pole of an electric lam 20 the other pole of which is in contact wit contact 11 and first line wire 12. The button 18 being pushed in causes spring 16 to establish an electric current throughthe .coil- 15 or the filament of-the lamp 20.
21, Fig. 3 is a spring socket for carrying the fixture when it is not in use.
22 is an annular ridge around the shell 5 i for the arms of the socket 21 to engage as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secizre by Letters Patent a In an electrical fixture, incombination a shell of -'nsulating material, a metallic socket carried by the interior of said shell,
an electrical connection one pol of which is carried by but insulated from said socket, a spring carried by said socket and in electrical connection with the other pole of the electrical connection, an electrically operated device adapted to be removably carried by the neck of said socket bne pole of which is in contact with the pole carried by and in sulated from said socket, and a means whereby said spring may be moved at Wlll into contact with the otherpole of said device in order to complete the circuit.
